The Big Island Vacations

Map of Hawaii

The Island of Hawaii is often referred to as the Big Island simply to avoid confusion between the state and island. Anyway you call it, it’s still a phenomenal place to explore. You’ll find a fantastic mixture of lush vegetation and mountain peaks, world-class golf courses and fantastic beaches, cooled lava formations beside a glowing river of liquid rock, coffee plantations and beachside bars offering drinks served out of pineapples.

The summits of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea stand out in Hilo Bay. The area is well known for its cultural celebrations, including the Merrie Monarch Festival held in March. One of the sites worth exploring in Akaka Falls State Park is the 442 ft fall that cascades down the mountainside. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, about 30 miles from Hilo, is an amazing, and hot, experience. Get an up close look at a lava flow and see this molten rock inch its way down. It’s best to get up-to-date info from the visitor center so you know where to look. Also, it really wouldn’t be a wise idea to wear anything but runners. Kailua-Kona is a Mecca of activity. With a Billfish tournament in August, the Ironman in October, festivals dedicated to chocolate and coffee and a host of other parties, you won’t find it hard coming up with something to do. Just south of here lies Kealakekua Bay, the site where Captain James Cook first set foot on the island back in 1778.
