The Turks and Caicos Islands have some of the best tropical beaches in the world and it’s also home to one of the world’s largest coral reef systems. Great beaches and coral reefs make it a great place for snorkeling and diving. The white sandy beaches spread across 230 miles. Right next to these beautiful beaches are the turquoise colored waters. They are filled with Manta Rays, Turtles, dolphins and even Humpback whales. The island also has more than 25 parks and protected areas, which range from lush green plants to sand dunes. Enjoy bird watching at one of the salt ponds that are home to Pelicans, Blue Herons, Boobies and Flamingos. Old McDonald didn’t have any of these on his farm – it’s here where you’ll find the only conch farm in the world. You can see how the process is done and even buy some fresh conch for a great salad. In fact, you’ll notice conch on most of the menus.
One of the sites worth seeing is the lighthouse. Brought over from the UK in pieces, it still stands today and guards the northern tip of Grand Turk. If you happen to be here in February and March, it’s also the place to go and see the whales. And if you’re an avid diver, you can even hear the whales singing to one another as they continue on their migration route. Make sure you visit the local superstar, JoJo the Dolphin. This playful creature has been calling Turks and the Caicos Islands home since 1980 and really enjoys playing with his two legged friends. In fact, he’s a great symbol of the nature conservation that the island works so hard at.
