Tokyo is one of those places you have to visit in order to really understand what its like. Tall buildings, history, friendly (and busy) people and lots of great places to explore make it a wonderful destination.
Tokyos drive to always stay ahead of the game has resulted in stunning skyscrapers and modern amenities at any corner, including an outstanding public transportation system. Considering the city was nearly flattened during World War II, its quite impressive to stand on the street and look around at the progress thats been achieved. Ironically, with all these fantastic buildings, theres not one thats known as Tokyos landmark. The entire city seems to be Tokyos landmark, giving you plenty of reasons to explore it all. And if youre looking for a bit of Tokyos history, youll find charming shops and restaurants located throughout the back streets.
What to see? The better question is where to begin
The Imperial Palace is considered the center of Tokyo. Although there are some sections of the complex not open to guests, the areas that are make it worthwhile. Enjoy the beautiful East Garden or cross over the Nijubashi Bridge on one of the two days its open to the general public New Years and the Emperors birthday. For an incredible view of the city, make your way up the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. As the second tallest building in Tokyo (over 800 feet) youll get quite a view. Whats the tallest building? The Tokyo Tower, which was modeled after the Eiffel Tower but is close to ten meters taller than it. The city made good use of this impressive building though since it includes a wax museum, aquarium and great observation decks. Another unique view of the city can also be enjoyed while cruising along the Sumida River.
If you dont want to shop on a holiday, dont come here. Its just too tempting. Whether you only go for the big brands or prefer to create your own unique style, love giving your credit card a workout or enjoy saving as much as possible, Tokyo has got you covered head to toe. Shopping malls and markets are pretty easy to find and although there are some people who may not classify shopping as a sightseeing experience, the upscale Ginza district definitely is.
Who knew Mickey Mouse had a home in Tokyo? Its true though and youll be able to enjoy the classics that include Dumbo the Flying Elephant, the Haunted Mansion and the ever popular Space Mountain. Tokyos DisneySea Park is also a great place to enjoy the rides. You may feel like youve crossed a few borders though if you catch the Magic Lamp show. Aladdin is alive and well in this fantastic presentation.
What youll love about Tokyo, other than the shopping, sites, great meals and whatever else youve been able to squeeze in, is that Tokyo likes to celebrate. Theres always a reason for a party or festival... and what vacation doesnt deserve a festival?
