Hong Kong Vacations

Map of Asia

Festivals, celebrations and an amazing nightlife. Fantastic shopping, great restaurants and lots of sites. These are only some of the pieces that make Hong Kong the place to go in Asia. Although its history and culture remain as important foundations, very few ancient buildings exist today. In fact, the contemporary architecture here will take your breath away. This city boasts an impressive presence in both the finance and trade industries and the results of its success are quite evident wherever you go.

The Bank of China Tower is much more than just a bank. This massive skyscraper is not only a great building to study and look at, but it also gives you a great view of the city. Whether it’s from the 43rd floor or the 70th, which is available by appointment only, you’ll enjoy seeing the city skyline. Going to see a bridge might not be your first stop while exploring Hong Kong, but the Tsing Ma Bridge is the world's sixth largest suspension bridge. Its span is greater than the Golden Gate’s and it’s a very cool site, whether during the day or night. Although it’s called the Temple of 10,000 Buddhas there are more than 12,000 statues throughout this monastery. It’s a bit of a trek to get there but once you do a beautiful nine-story pagoda will greet you. Not sure what a pagoda is? Imagine a stack of square hatboxes sitting atop of the other with the largest at the base and the smallest at its peak. Although Hong Kong’s buildings are reason enough to keep your eyes looking around you, keep them open for the Avenue of Stars where you’ll see the stars of Hong Kong’s film celebrities, which include Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee and John Woo just to name a few. With so much to see and experience, you’ll be happy to know that English is accepted almost everywhere and that there are English signs to help you find your way.

After a full day of sites you’ll be happy to know that Hong Kong offers more restaurants for you to choose from than you’ll be able to get to. Even if you went out for breakfast, lunch and dinner every single day of the week, it would take you over eight years to get a taste from them all. The only caveat worth mentioning is that there are a few establishments that should perhaps... not be establishments. These however are few and far between. You’ll be able to experience amazing meals whether it’s in an elegant establishment, floating restaurant or roadside food stand. And no evening would be complete without catching the fantastic Symphony of Lights. Both light and sound tease your senses along the beautiful Victoria Harbour.

Need a break from the streets and skyscrapers? Aching to see some natural beauty? Make your way to the amazing Hong Kong Wetland Park. There’s a great Atrium that gives you a wonderful view of the wetlands and the park is one of the world’s best natural history museums. Hong Kong’s coastline is another great example of its natural diversity. Prefer to enjoy some natural beauty up close? Hong Kong has quite a few islands that are ideal for exploring. The island of Cheung Chau is quite famous for its annual Bun Festival, which puts on a fantastic display of Chinese culture. But even if you’re not here during the fourth moon in the lunar calendar, which are the dates of the weeklong festival, the island is a wonderful place to enjoy the waterfront activity and can be explored by foot – no cars are allowed on the island. As the third largest of Hong Kong’s islands, Lamma Island is a tranquil place where again, no cars are allowed. There are wonderful trails, great beaches and perhaps more importantly, it claims to have some of the very best seafood restaurants available. Hong Kong Island is quite fantastic as well, especially its Victoria Harbour. You’ll also find great ways to walk off the delicious meals whether you choose to do it in the big shopping malls or through the beautiful mountain ranges. Although you’ll find great deals in the malls, the views from the mountain peaks are breathtaking. Another way to get your breath taken away is to enjoy the Ocean Park amusement park. Some of its many highlights include the panda exhibit, shark tank and the butterfly garden.

Lantau Island has enough activity to give you plenty of options for a great holiday. Good thing there’s a lot of room for it all. As Hong Kong’s largest island you’ll be able to enjoy great nature walks along winding trails and fantastic views from Lantau Peak. Chances are pretty good you’ll see the Po Lin Monastery while here. It’s most famous resident is the Giant Buddha. Why is it called the Giant Buddha? Well, it’s an 85-foot high bronze statue that took close to ten years to complete. Get ready for a bit of a leg workout if you want to see it up close though. There are close to 270 steps that you’ll need to climb before you can reach it. For the kids traveling with you, or the kid inside, enjoy a fantastic day at Hong Kong Disneyland. Whether you spend your time with Mickey or Winnie the Pooh, ride the classics like Space Mountain or enjoy the spectacular Lion King show, you’ll love spending some time at this park. Another unique feature of Lantau, if you’re lucky enough to see them, are the Chinese White dolphins that swim along its coast. In fact, there’s a marine park at the northern part of the island designated to protect the amazing underwater life that thrives here.

There really isn’t a lot that Hong Kong doesn’t have to offer. In fact, it would probably take more work to think about what it doesn’t. What does that mean for you? Endless possibilities of exploring, enjoying and experiencing all that Hong Kong has to offer.
