Wheeling once stood as the capitol of West Virginia. Today it is a great escape for those interested in exploring this beautiful state. Plus, it’s close to Pennsylvania giving you plenty of changes to visit both states.
Those interested in West Virginia’s history should make their way to the Independence Hall. Victorian Old Town is another area worth visiting, especially to see the restored homes. One of Wheeling’s trademarks is its Suspension Bridge. It was once the longest in the world but continues to stand as a fantastic tribute to the creativity and engineering required when it was built over 150 years ago. Crossing over the Ohio River along the bridge gives you fantastic views of Wheeling’s skyline.
Shoppers can make their way to Cabela’s, which is an outdoor retail complex. Whatever your outdoor needs are, you’ll find it here. Even if you’re not into hunting or fishing, visiting Cabela’s is worth the experience. The showrooms are well laid out and even have huge aquariums inside.
All bets are on in Wheeling. The Island Racetrack and Gaming Center has been around for a few centuries and continues to draw visitors by the thousands every year. Greyhound racing, one-armed bandits and many other favorites abound here. Ladies and gentlemen, place your bets.
