Beckley was built on the coal mining industry. Although that era no longer thrives as it once did, you can still enjoy a fantastic tour of its history at the Beckley’s Exhibition Coal Mine.

You’ll find this city has wonderful festivals held throughout the year, including the Virginia Highland Games and Celtic Festival and the amazing Appalachian Coal Town Christmas and Light Festival.

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate the challenges Winterplace has to provide. Fitzpatrick Park and Lake Stephens Park are also great places to explore when the snow has melted away. Wherever you decide to explore, you’ll love the natural beauty that rules here.

Beckley is also home to more of a unique triathlon. The Captain Thurmond’s Challenge is an annual event that is a combination of biking, rafting and running. If you’d like to enjoy everything Beckley has to offer, and not break into a sweat doing it, stroll down Main Street and you’ll find wonderful restaurants and great stores. In general, the downtown area has done a great job in preserving its history and yet it still offers great entertainment that you can enjoy today.
