Spokane Hotel Guide Cheap Spokane Hotels

Taking full advantage of the stunning scenery that surrounds it, Spokane is an outdoor enthusiasts dream come true. Spokane is a Native American word that means Children of the Sun. Even its name is earthy. Interestingly enough, the sun does shine plenty here. Spokane is also the gateway to the Inland Northwest. That means a visit here brings you to the threshold of the Rocky Mountains, the Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks, and the BC Rockies. Probably a good idea to pack your hiking boots.

The Riverfront Park is an impressive 100-acre recreational area that was created after Expo 74. It is definitely a Spokane must. Located in the downtown district, it is easy to get to and hosts great sites and activities. There is the Skyride, which is a wonderful gondola ride that takes you high above the Spokane Falls. History buffs will want to see the preserved Looff Carousel and impressive clock tower, which is the last remaining symbol of the Great Northern Railway clock. Movie critics can enjoy a show at the impressive IMAX theatre.

Manito Park is another beautiful park and is only slightly smaller than the Riverfront. There are great walking paths that take you to stunning gardens. A few worth mentioning include Rose Hill, Duncan Garden and the Perennial Garden. There is also a playground and duck pond for the kids to enjoy and hiking trails for the more enthusiastic. Spokane has numerous other parks located within the city limits or nearby. It would be near impossible to visit them all in one trip but that only gives you a reason to come back again.

Although the parks offer a wealth of great activities, the nearby mountains also provide you with an outdoor playground. There are biking paths, hiking trails, kayaking and rafting. Spokane has a large number of lakes for you to visit as well, which means fishers may just want to pack their poles along. Once the snow falls, the dogsleds, skis and snowshoes come out. One of the best places to get in a few runs is at the Mt. Spokane Ski and Snowboard Park. Whenever you come though, make sure you take along your camera. The scenery from up here is incredible. For those who prefer to stay closer to the ground, there are also great golf courses for you to try out your luck. Speaking of luck, Spokane also has a few casinos for you enjoy.

With nature always at the forefront, the business area of Spokane is near the Riverfront Park, as is the shopping. What makes it even better are the pedestrian bridges that take you over the traffic. The shopping districts vary from boutiques to mega malls. There is also an amazing Nordstroms department store. Wherever you go though, you will find the latest trends and accessories. Spokane also hosts a few great events throughout the year. Two worth mentioning include the Lilac Bloomsday Run, which can attract over 50,000 runners and walkers, and Hoopfest. The later is one of the largest three on tree basketball tournaments in the world. Tens of thousands of hopefuls show off their talents, including a few NBAers.

Although not located right in Spokane, the Silverwood Theme Park is less than an hour away. This Idaho attraction has lots of rides that zoom you up, down and even sideways. Those with queasy tummies can enjoy the steam train ride and everyone can cool off on the waterslides and wave pool.

Spokane is located in a great wine region. Take a tour of the wineries or simply enjoy a glass with your dinner. After a delicious meal, Spokane has many options for your evening entertainment. Its symphony has concerts throughout the year and its Jazz Orchestra is one of the oldest in the States. Those looking for more voltage in their concerts may want to see what is playing at the Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena. This venue also has many non-music events, including Disney on Ice, NCAA rounds, football and hockey.

Spokane is a fantastic playground for those who love the great outdoors. There is much more to this city though. Whether you explore the hiking trails, wander the streets or comb through the boutiques and malls, the crisp air will leave you reenergized and refreshed.
