Located along the northwest coast, the state of Washington is the only state named after a president and is filled with unique attractions and beautiful scenery. The Evergreen State, the 18th largest state in the union, can be divided into six geographic land areas; the Olympic Mountains, the Coast Range, the Puget Sound Lowlands, the Cascade Mountains, the Columbia Plateau, and the Rocky Mountains. Whether you stay on dry land in lush western Washington or dry and arid eastern Washington or cruise along the water's edge you'll find there is a lot to do.
One of the most recognizable structures in Washington is the Space Needle built for the 1962 Space Aged World's Fair. Standing on the observation deck provides you with a fantastic view of the city skyline, Puget Sound and Mount Rainier (the third largest mountain in the US). If you enjoy heights Washington has many fantastic mountain peaks for you to explore. Travel two hours south of Seattle and see Mt. St. Helens Volcanic Monument an active volcano that blew her top in 1980. The summer months provide you with endless hiking and biking paths and the winter transforms them into fantastic ski runs just an hour east of Seattle. The lakes, Puget Sound with the San Juan Islands and Pacific Ocean give you plenty of chances to try out your lucky fishing lures for native Salmon, or catch a whale, orca, sea lion or bald eagle sighting. There are also many beautiful parks, including Olympic National Forest and Park with its rain forests the North Cascades National Park and Mount Rainer National Park, filled with great outdoor activities. With so much to do you'll probably need to come back a few days in a row to get the most out of them. Scenic Eastern Washington with its dry arid climate is home to the largest Apple crop in the world and a wine country that produces award winning wines from family vintners. While venturing east, don't overlook the Grand Coulee Dam one of over 1000 dams in the state and the largest concrete structure in the world backing up the raging waters of the Columbia River to create Lake Roosevelt all the way to the Canadian border.
Your evenings will be filled with great outdoor and indoor concerts and a club scene that launched the careers of Bing Crosby, Jimi Hendrix, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Sir Mix-a-Lot, Ray Charles, The Heart Sisters, Kenny G, Quincy Jones, Judy Collins, Modest Mouse, Death Cab for Cutie and others.
Visit and you can bring home Washington apples, salmon, wine, potatoes, corn, bing cherries, oysters, clams, mussels, microbrew craft beers and ales, or memories of a place like no other on the planet.
