Virginia State Guide

Virginia is one of the most beautiful states in the nation. Of course it helps that it’s located right beside the Atlantic Ocean. The beaches are clean, the waves are perfect for surfers, and the boardwalks are lined with fantastic restaurants. The rest of the state is filled with beautiful scenery, interesting historic sites and great museums.

Preserving its rich history, Virginia is a must for those who love the past. Stroll through Colonial Williamsburg and get a first hand look at what life was like in the 1800s. It is the nation’s oldest outdoor living museum, complete with persons dressed in period costumes. The Confederate articles located at the Museum and White House of the Confederacy is the world’s largest collection of its kind. You’ll feel extra thankful at the Berkeley Plantation. It claims to have hosted the very first Thanksgiving celebration.

The museums in Virginia are worth your time as well. The Marine Science Museum has a 50,000 gallon aquarium teemed with beautiful aquatic life, provides ocean sightseeing tours and a great IMAX theater. The Chrysler Museum is one of the best in the state, if not also one of the best in the nation. Wander from the Renoir to a Monet and view more than 30,000 fantastic pieces of art. The Newseum is a must for any budding journalists traveling with you. It features the history of journalism and a great array of newspapers from around the world. Although visiting an office might not be on your list of things to do, a tour through the Pentagon is pretty fantastic.

Virginia is filled with fantastic ways to enjoy its beautiful outdoors. Those who prefer to stay dry will find many walking, hiking and bike paths. Then there are the beaches. The miles of sand and great cities along the water’s edge are huge drawing cards for guests looking for the sun. The river systems throughout the state also provide great kayaking and canoeing routes. The impressive Elizabeth River hosts the Norfolk Navel Base, which is one of the largest in the world, and is a port for cruise ships. Seeing them come in and going out is a real treat even if you’re not boarding one of these floating cities. If you’re looking for a bit more adventure you could watch a race at the Richmond International Raceway or let loose at Virginia’s theme parks. Both Paramount’s Kings Dominion and Busch Gardens in Williamsburg are fantastic amusement parks, filled with enough rides to make you lose your voice. Although the great outdoors should be explored, staying inside has its benefits as well. The Historic Triangle has 150 outlet stores for you to rummage through. The Williamsburg Pottery Factory is another shopper’s paradise. How can it not be when it spreads over 200 acres and fills up 32 buildings?

Pack good walking shoes, your beach towels and camera. Virginia is steeped in history, offers you fantastic sites and is quite simply an amazing place to explore.
