Gorgeous Hotel...Great Stay....Will Stay Again!! - posted on 07/28/2005

Gorgeous building...Historical Charm...Exceptional Staff! Park in the Travis St. Garage and save $25 + tips a day! We did have a fairly humorous experience when the shower came on early one morning. I told the front desk that they should have told me our room was haunted. LOL Our only complaints: $10.00 a day for internet access and they put us on the 5th floor right next to the air unit. It was sooooo loud! Great stay! We will go back!

Historic Hotel - posted on 01/04/2006

The Gunter has character and old world charm. A historic hotel, it has clean, comfortable rooms, a beautiful lobby with high ceilings, chandeliers, wood paneling, and comfy leather/brocade seating. The concierge staff is friendly and helpful. Conveniently located one block from the river and 5 minutes from the Alamo, the hotel is on the trolley route, making tourist destinations inexpensive and convenient to reach. The children's museum is across the street; and a great coffee shop (for a sophisticated java) is caddy to the hotel. For the price, you won't find a better deal.

Beautiful Hotel - posted on 07/26/2005

Everything was wonderful except the parking. The price should be on the website. We could have used the $6 parking across the street but were afraid it would cost a fortune since it is $6 per trip out. We ended up not leaving the lot at all so it would have been our best bet. $20/day is way too high for valet parking. We had to wait quite a while for the attendant to finally bring our car.

AWESOME LOCATION - posted on 07/08/2005

The staff was great from the valet parking to the front desk attendant, really friendly and helpful, the room was ok,but the bed was awesome, the bathtub was kind of small to take a shower and the parking fee was really high, also, especially if you have kids, there is not a TV channel for kids, and the pool is kind of small for the size of the hotel. The location was great,we did not have to use our car at all,we were 1/2 block from the riverwalk and 4 blocks from the Alamo and the Marquet Square, needs a little bit of improvement but we will definately go back.

We got the - posted on 02/14/2007

While the hotel is bubbling over in history; the bathrooms could really use an update. You had to stand in the bath tub to close the door! The room was large, we had two huge windows that gave us a lovely view of the roofs of the buildings next door. The "Romance Package" was delicious although not really worth the extra, (Chocolate covered strawberries and champagne.) What really made it worth is was the staff's proffessionalism and kindness. Watch out for the $22 valet parking!

OK, but Some Improvement Needed - posted on 01/19/2007

Thanks to everyone who mentioned parking - we utilized parking garage across the street (corner of St. Marys St) and paid $6 per day. Bathrooms need renovating - still have the rusty metal pipe toilets that look like they are from when hotel originally opened. Room was nicely decorated but humid too warm (no matter how much we lowered thermostat) yet whenever we opened the door, we got a rush of cool air from the hallway.

Great Hotel - posted on 01/04/2007

Stayed for the Alamo Bowl. Located very close to Riverwalk. Friendly staff. Great lobby. Nice bar, restaurant, and bakery onsite. Expected a small room but plenty big with 2 queen size beds and a full size business desk.

My stay at Sheraton Hotel Gunter - posted on 10/31/2006

I truly enjoyed my stay at the Sheraton Hotel Gunter in San Antonio. The hotel staff was very attentive and friendly. And the bed was very comfortable. It was easily accessible to RiverWalk and Majestic Theater (right across the street) as well as other downtown attractions.

Mainly for adults - posted on 09/06/2006

The Sheraton Gunter is a beautiful historical hotel. It is well cared for and the staff are wonderful. The cost of parking is a little high although the valet parking was quite fast, we never had to wait. The pool was a bit chilly even in hot weather and it would have been nice to have a gameroom and inexpensive dining for my children. This is mainly an adult hotel.

A Very Nice Hotel - posted on 08/13/2006

We moved here from another hotel due to unclean rooms. The Gunter will not allow a guest to check in until their room has been inspected by a supervisor who specializes in maid service. This makes for a pretty late 3:00pm check-in but it's worth it. The parking fee is stiff, but is consistent with every other nice hotel in downtown S.A. The staff is obviously well trained in customer service as everyone from the concierge, to the valet, to the room service attendant treated us with the utmost respect and courtesy. The hotel is also very beautiful and full of history.

Beautiful Room - posted on 06/16/2006

We enjoyed the room on the Club Floor. It was a beautiful room. We had 3 people staying in a double queen room. The dressing area was very small for 3 people with not much space on the vanity. But we loved the room. The beds are wonderful, and very comfy.

Gunter $$$$ - posted on 06/15/2006

The valet parking is so expensive and across the street it is $5 versus $18 a day so opt for that!! Arrived at 2:00 and couldn't check in until 3:00 but your luggage can sit on a cart unsecured. Rooms were great and remodeled but ventilation system required fan running (annoying).Wireless internet $10 a day in room but lobby has two laptops wired for your convenience. Be careful to log out as I found email accounts left open and it won't allow you to get rid of cookies. Price was higher than most riverwalk hotels so I would opt to book earlier and save money. No one stays in their room!

Great place to stay - posted on 05/31/2006

Right on top of the riverwalk, clean rooms, GREAT beds. Rooms are not very big but the hotel is very old and that's how they used to build them. Reminds me of the Peabody in Memphis with the woodwork and decor. It's a step back in time visually but still has everything you need. We didn't use the valet ($$) parking and instead used the public garage across the street from the Gunter parking lot. No complaints here. Great location, great value.

Sheraton Gunter - posted on 04/15/2006

Was beautiful once upon a time, and will be again, once they are finished renovating it. The rooms are smaller than what we are accustomed to when staying at a Sheraton, and the bathrooms are very small, with toilet and tub/shower in one area, and sink in an open area. Pool was unavailable last 2 days of our trip. Room service was speedy. Close enough to Riverwalk and The Alamo, but far enough away from the crowds. Staff was nice. Overall, this hotel was just okay.

OK - posted on 03/20/2006

If you are planning to rent a car and stay at this hotel then plan to pay!! All of their parking for "GUESTS"!? is VALET and they are proud of it.. it is $18 per day!! They do not bother to mention this on their website either, imagine that! Park just to the north of the hotel it is only $6 per day.

Oh yea, if you are going to stay at this hotel and you are renting a car, they do not bother to tell you that ALL of the parking a "GUEST" has is VALET and it is $18 per day!!! They do not bother to mention this on their website either, hmm imagine that.. Park to the north of the hotel it is only $6 per day. My advice is take a cab if you are just going to see downtown and not SeaWorld!

Great location and value! - posted on 03/01/2006

We stayed here between Christmas and New Year's Day. It's a great location, close to the Riverwalk. Only negatives would be insufficient air conditioner (our room was very warm in December), and my husband was allergic to the down pillows. The bed is marvelous - wonderful sleeping! Check-in was slow in that they WOULD NOT let you have a room prior to check-in time. We all had to line up and wait; we've never had that happen anywhere else we've stayed. BUT we would recommend it - you can't beat the location to the Riverwalk for the price. It's a very clean, beautiful, historic hotel.

Good location - posted on 01/26/2006

The hotel is nice and in a good location. But for the price that you pay, I would think that there would be a microwave and refrigerator in the room. This hotel in my opinion is set up more for business people than service members. For that price, a service member expects more. No military rates, no continental breakfast, NOTHING!!

I love this place!! - posted on 01/04/2006

This is a great gem located very close to the Riverwalk. I first stayed at this hotel in 2000 and have returned three more times. The hotel is kept clean and each room is somewhat unique. Starting Jan. 2006 the hotel is updating it's decore. Stay here as much as you can. I would have my honeymoon here!!

If you like class... - posted on 01/02/2006

The hotel is very very nice, located just steps from everything (riverwalk, mall, bars and nice restaurants). You better get tired from sightseeing because you will enjoy sleeping at their bed, those Starwood group hotels sure really know their business...definetly will stay there again.

No Extra $ for the Ghosts - posted on 09/15/2005

Excellent value for the money. The inside bakery/coffee shop is wonderful I did not anticipate the ghostly antics I experienced- door mysteriously locking me out, unexplained phone calls & tugging on the bedsheets. It went w/ the history & charm of the hotel.

would definitely stay there again - posted on 08/18/2005

The Gunter is a nice hotel that won't cost you a fortune. The rooms are nicely apportioned and the staff was great. The food was top-notch although the Gunter staff could definitely work on making things a little cheaper. All in all, the rooms and beds were great, and the staff was superb. It's a great hotel, especially for the price. It's a block from the River Walk area and you'll definitely love not paying River Walk prices even though it's basically on it.

Pretty Hotel - posted on 08/14/2005

We had a great stay. Booked for 4 and received a King room. Changed to a double but had to unhappily settle for smoking which turned out to be OK. Decor was really pretty. Beds were comfortable. Bathroom needs curtain or door between it and room. Bathroom light shines out into room. Location was great for walking. Pool and jacuzzi were nice.If you don't want to spend so much on valet parking you can park yourself for a lot less and only walk a short distance to the hotel. Staff was very friendly.
