South Carolina is a perfect example of how great opposites can be. The state is filled with a mixture of old and combines its traditions with modern living. Perhaps you’d like to spend your time along the coast and surf the waves. Perhaps you’d rather go golfing or even learn about American history. It seems whatever your interests are South Carolina is a place you’ll love to explore.
History has been well preserved in South Carolina. The Charleston Museum is the oldest in the nation and has a wonderful collection of artifacts that tell of this state’s past. The Congregation Beth Elohim is the second oldest synagogue in the US and is a fantastic example of Greek Revival architecture. The Circular Congregation Church is another fine example of how well South Carolina has preserved its historic buildings. Although the structures are lovely, the natural beauty that thrives here is also well worth your time. The Magnolia Plantation and Audubon Swamp Garden is a wonderful place to enjoy the great outdoors as is Finlay Park, which hosts many events throughout the year. Falls Park also has a great collection of gardens. If you’re looking for a lot of ground to cover make your way to Lake Murray. Spanning over 50,000 acres you’ll find a wealth of activities to keep you busy.
There’s a lot more to South Carolina though than historic buildings and outdoor adventures. The Darlington International Raceway has provided fantastic entertainment to racecar fans for over 50 years. The Weatherly Museum is a must for those interested in the history of car racing. The South Carolina Aquarium allows you to come up close and personal with moray eels, river otters and one massive sea turtle. Its Secrets of the Amazon exhibit is also worth visiting. Of course the aquatic creatures at the Ripley’s Aquarium would have to be unique and different, but that provides you with an opportunity to learn and see things that are out of the norm. Prefer animals that can get dry? Make your way to the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, which is a beautiful combination of both a botanical garden and a zoo.
Dining in South Carolina is a real treat. Finding true southern style cooking will be quite easy and oh so enjoyable. Its location along the coast also makes it a wonderful place to enjoy fresh seafood. If you can, try to visit during the annual Shrimp Festival. You’d be amazed at what you can all create with shrimp. Just make sure you come hungry.
Everything is pretty easy going in South Carolina. You’ll love exploring what it has to offer and love how charming its cities and town can be.
