Named after the great explorer, Columbus is a fantastic city that’s worth an exploration all on its own. It’s filled with museums and arts, opera and ballet as well as a great theater scene. Whether its rock or blues, jazz or county, music lovers will really enjoy the sights, and more so the sounds of Columbus. And for those who aren’t so musically inclined, or just like to explore what else Columbus has to offer, they won’t be disappointed.
Located on the Scioto River, you’ll be amazed at the full-size replica of Columbus’ three-masted flagship, The Santa Maria that’s been permanently anchored here. Also located along the banks of the Scioto River is the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, home to over 650 wildlife species and is a must for the animal lovers traveling with you.
Another Columbus essential is the nationally known Center of Science and Industry, known as COSI. It’s an exceptional attraction that makes learning science fun. Through over 300 interactive exhibits, the hands-on experience will be a science lesson one won’t soon forget.
If you’d prefer to explore the scenery Columbus has to offer, you won’t be disappointed. The Franklin Park Conservatory was inspired by London’s Crystal Palace and is a beautiful conservatory that houses tropical gardens and four of the Earth's ecosystems. The Whetstone Park is one of the largest rose gardens in the States. Over 13 acres showcase 11,000 gorgeous rose bushes and gardens for herbs, daffodils and perennials.
When you’ve seen enough of the sites, make your way to the historic German Village. It’s jammed with restaurants, shops and beer gardens housed in buildings from the 1800s. Its also home to The Book Loft. This Columbus original is a great place to finger through tons of books at bargain prices. Close by to the German Village is the Brewery District. You’ll find a great meal in one of the restaurants, which have been converted from old beer-making breweries.
Columbus was named after the famous explorer but you’ll soon find that the city itself is filled with sites and sounds worth exploring on your own.
