Ever think about taking a trip to the capital of Ballooning? Well, welcome to Albuquerque. Its true. This oasis in the desert is well known for its balloon festival and even has its own ballooning museum. Albuquerque, which means impossible to type, has much more to offer. Actually it was named after the Duke of Alburquerque, a governor of New Spain.
Situated in the Middle Rio Grande Valley, on the banks of the Rio Grande River and the spectacular Sandia Mountains as a backdrop, this fascinating city is a haven for mountain bikers, skiers and hikers. There are even a few golf courses for you to try out.
Not so interested in all that exercise? Albuquerque is also well known for the delicious wines it produces, a tradition that started back in the mid-17th century.
One of Albuquerques highlights is the Historic Old Town, where the Villa of Albuquerque was founded in 1706. Its main street is the historic Route 66, the great Mother Road that guided the way for many travelers during the Great Depression. This area is now known as the Nob Hill-Highland District. Theres a fantastic row of stores and restaurants so grab a cup of coffee, maybe a bunch of fresh flowers and buy a few gifts for your friends and family. Albuquerque is truly a gem in the desert waiting for you to explore all that it has to offer.
