New Mexico State Guide

Priding itself in a long lasting heritage that’s held tightly to its roots, New Mexico is an amazing state to explore. The brown adobe buildings, delicious cuisine and handmade crafts all showcase the craftsmanship that have stood the test of time. The European and Spanish influences in New Mexico can be felt throughout the state and there is a rich history in both religion and art as well. Although there are many world-class hotels offering the latest in gourmet meals and spa treatments New Mexico is best discovered when you’re not on the beaten path.

New Mexico has carefully preserved its past. If you’d like more insight into their customs and traditions make your way to the Taos Pueblo. This small village has been inhabited for over 1000 years making it one of the oldest in the nation. Another interesting site is El Zaguan. It is the homestead of James Johnson, one of the first American citizens in Santa Fe. One of the oldest churches in the nation can also be found in Santa Fe. The San Miguel Mission was built in 1610 and houses the San Jose Bell, known as the oldest bell in the nation. If you are interested in historic churches the Cathedral of St. Francis of Assisi is a must. The stained glass windows and glass chandeliers alone are worth seeing.

Map of New Mexico

New Mexico is filled with stunning landscapes. The A. R. Leding Cactus Garden is a wonderful way to see a wide variety of these prickly plants and see how beautiful they truly are. Just don’t trip while you’re walking the grounds. Some of New Mexico’s natural landscapes provide you with the best views. The Bisti Badlands and the De-Nah-Zin Wilderness are definite musts if you love the outdoors. Other great areas worth exploring include the Carlsbad Caverns National Park and the city of Farmington, whose location makes up the Four Corners Region. Those looking for a bit more adventure will absolutely love the Rio Grande Gorge. Crossing over the Gorge Bridge is a fantastic way to enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape. The Sandia Mountains stand as a spectacular backdrop and are a great place to do some exploring. Before the snow falls the trails are ideal for both hikers and bikers. However, when that snow does begin to come down the mountains get transformed into a fantastic ski getaway.

Golfing in New Mexico is a treat for anyone who loves the game. The pristine courses are perfect and if you happen to have a bad golf day you can at least enjoy the stunning scenery that surrounds you. Perhaps it comes as no surprise then that artists would take advantage of the beauty here as well. Those interested in museums will want to make time for the art market in Santa Fe, the Museum of New Mexico and the fantastic Georgia O’Keeffe Museum.

New Mexico absolutely loves life and the numerous festivals help prove that. A few worth mentioning include the annual Whole Enchilada Fiesta, the Balloon Festival and the Wine Festival. Even if you’re not a huge wine connoisseur you’ll want to partake in a delicious glass of the local wine. The winemaking traditions have been passed down from generation to generation... to generation. That means they’ve had plenty of time to get it just right.

Whether you’re in the car traveling along the historic Route 66 or making your own tracks New Mexico will leave you wanting more. Enjoying its history all the while taking in the stunning scenery help make it one of the best vacation spots around.
