Morristown Hotel Guide Cheap Morristown Hotels

Morristown in New Jersey has a past steeped in important historical events, and imbued with the presence of the founding fathers. Even today this small town is making history as an educational and religious center for Jewish studies, and a pioneer in the rights and abilities of the sight-impaired. Travelers interested in American history will find a treasure trove of sightseeing opportunities, but so will the nature lover, the spiritualist, the child, and anyone who is just plain curious.

Morristown was founded in the mid-1700's and named after the first Royal Governor of New Jersey, Louis Morris. His grandson, of the same name, would go on to serve with the Continental Congress and sign the Declaration of Independence. It was an area rich with farming and hunting possibilities, and the community flourished.

In 1777, Morristown was chosen twice as the headquarters for George Washington's army. First they stayed at Jacob Arnold's Tavern - then located on the town commons, the Morristown Green - and later at the Ford Mansion. Troops settled in Jockey Hollow, and during the worst of the conflict, the town's churches acted as hospitals. The town's impact does not end with the Revolutionary War, however, and many of the sites open to the public connect to travelers of all interests.

History Buffs

The Ford Museum, a former mansion used by Washington and his troops in 1779, not only preserves history surrounding the war, but of that period in time. Not far away, the Macculloch Hall Historic Museum and Gardens, home to George Macculloch, who was responsible for building the Macculloch Canal and opening up trade in the region, gives visitors a glimpse at the home used as both a church and a school in the town's early history. The art gallery on-site hosts a large collection by political cartoonist, Thomas Nast, who made Morristown his home for many years. The Macculloch gardens horde dozens of period details, such as the "trot" around a large tree on property where ladies of the house would do their exercising. Other museum stops include Historic Speedwell, where Samuel F B Moorse and Alfred Vail invented the telegraph in 1838, and the Schuyler-Hamilton House, family home of First Lady, Betsy Schuyler Hamilton.

In addition, if you have ever been intrigued by farm life during the 19th Century, Fosterfields Living Historical Farm will be a perfect stop on your itinerary. Not only can you see the way things were done "back in the day" you have a chance to get your hands dirty. A popular spot for groups with children, the casual atmosphere and open access to activities will leave you feeling invited and able after a long (relaxing) day of collecting eggs in the henhouse and churning butter. The site has a schedule of chores posted for each day, as well as special events - like the County Fair in September - throughout the year.

Nature Lovers

Morristown was chosen as a summer spot for New Yorkers a century ago, not just because of its close proximity to the city, but because of the area's surrounding beauty. Transportation advancements lead some high rollers to move here permanently, but it is still a small, quaint town where solace can be found. Morristown National Historical Park encompasses three distinct nature areas that share ties to the past: Jockey Hollow, the Ford Mansion and Fort Nonsense. Home to Pennsylvania troops during the 1770's, the area was marked for preservation and is now home to a maze of trails and thick forest. Area residents consider it a gem of solace in what's become a much-too-busy world. Hiking, and jogging, as well as birdwatching, are popular activities in this quiet and beautiful park.

Another popular spot, filled with formal gardens as well as nature trails and hiking opportunities, is the Frelinghuysen Arboretum. With over 127 acres of native trees and brush - all labeled for visitors' convenience - you'll be amazed by the beauty, and the beauty of nature, and have plenty of space to spread out even with a large group of small children.

Others

Morritown is also home to present day organizations that affect not just New Jersey or the US, but the world. Home to The Seeing Eye, travelers will notice future service dogs and their trainers out and about throughout town, readying the animals to work with people who are sight-impaired. This small New Jersey stop is also home to one of the world's largest Chabad Lubavitch Chasidic yeshivas, the Rabbinical College of America. While not a tourist attraction in the traditional sense, many significant Jewish religious leaders have attended the college and can be seen around town. There are several historically significant Christian churches in Morristown, as well.

Great for family or tourist travel, this tiny town in New Jersey offers up a surprising number of opportunities for its size. Some of the country's most important historical advancements were made here. The founding fathers found security in its location, resources and particularly the people. That hasn't changed much over the last 200 years. Whether you're stopping for business or pleasure, you'll find many activities and friendly residents to help make your stay inviting and restful.
