North Platte was the hometown for none other then Buffalo Bill, also known as William F. Cody. Although not everyone walks around in a big white cowboy carrying a rifle, the presence of this frontier legend is definitely alive and well in North Platte. Visit the Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park and see his amazing Victorian home and barn. The barn is now the stage for items kept from the legendary Wild West Show.
Fort Cody is Nebraskas largest souvenir store. Youll know youve arrived by the enormous Buffalo Bill figure out front. Inside youll see a fantastic selection of Minnetonka Moccasins, gold, t-shirts and a whole lot more. Continuing with the Buffalo Bill theme, the Cody Park attractions make it worth visiting. Inside youll find a life-size statue of Buffalo Bill, the Wild West Memorial and the very cool Railroad Museum.
One of the attractions not linked to Buffalo Bill is the Lincoln County Historical Museum, which includes the World War II Canteen display. The volunteers that made up this canteen ensured that each military train received food and hospitality. That meant they were on duty for 51 straight months, 24 hours each day. Quite impressive.
North Platte is also home to Nebraskaland Days a 12-day fest that celebrates its western legacy. There will be a lot of cowboy hats and boots in the crowd. The celebrations include rodeos, parades, a pageant for Miss Nebraska and lots of fantastic food. Oh, there are also concerts and dances to ensure your evenings are stretched out until the wee hours of the morning.
