Kearney is no different than any other Nebraskan town – it is loyal to its university team. The Lopers draw out the crowds in whatever sport they’re playing. If you’re not into college sports though, Kearney has a long history that is well worth exploring. Fort Kearny was built to protect emigrants making their way along the Oregon Trail and stands today as a tribute to the many pioneers and crews who traveled along its path. The Great Platte River Road Archway Monument is also a tribute to those who made the journey so long ago. The location of this monument marks the dusty trail used by Wells Fargo, the Railroad and the interstate that exists today. If you’re still interested in more history head over to the Harold Warp Pioneer Village. You’ll see over 50,000 items on display and great exhibits that showcase life back in the 1830s. Kearney is also a haven for nature lovers and nature itself. During the spring the Platte River becomes a stopover for hundreds of thousands of migrating birds making their way back up to Canada. It is quite spectactular to see.
