Spending time outdoors in Nebraska is a definite must. Whether you’re hiking the trails in Fontenelle Forest, improving your swing on the many golf courses or simply strolling along the streets, Nebraska’s beauty will greet you at every corner. After a long hard day of all that walking you’ll have worked up an appetite to enjoy a top grade steak and soothing glass of the local wine.
The capitol building, located in Lincoln, is a fantastic example of thinking outside the box. The murals and details explain why it is considered an architectural wonder. The Great Platte River Road Archway is another interesting place to explore. There are many wonderful places to visit if you’re interested in Nebraska’s history. Fort Kearny, built to protect the travelers along the Oregon Trail, stands today as a tribute to the pioneers. Harold Warp Pioneer Village gives you a fantastic look at what life was like in the 1830’s. For a more hands on experience though you should make your way to the Wessels Living History Farm. It’s still functioning and is a real treat for the whole family.
Looking for other unique places to explore? Make your way to the National Museum of Roller Skating. Yes, one does exist. The Frank H. Woods Telephone Pioneer Museum is also quite interesting. The Strategic Air and Space Museum is a one of a kind museum. Stretching across 300,000 acres you’ll find a great collection of planes and other memorabilia. Although the purpose of Boys Town is quite sad today the 900-acre property stands as a tribute to neglected youth. The Hall of History and Garden of the Bible are definite musts.
Visiting the Henry Doorly Zoo is a treat for the whole family. Make your way through a massive indoor desert and rainforest, explore Bear Canyon or visit the Gorilla Valley. Whichever exhibit you visit it’s quite evident that the Henry Doorly Zoo protects its inhabitants and strives to educate the visitors. No wonder it’s one of the very best zoos in the world. One of Nebraska’s other treasures is the Omaha Botanical Gardens. Spanning over 100 acres you definitely need to carve out some time to enjoy it all.
Sport fans know Nebraska to be the home of the NCAA Baseball Championships. Some of that legendary Midwestern hospitality seems to fly right out the window at some of the college football games. This is definitely a football state fiercely loyal to their home teams and it is a definite rush to cheer for the home team.
Although quite a few cowboys roam the streets today, the legendary Buffalo Bill is the best known of them all. Nebraska pays tribute to this native son at Cody Park, where you’ll see a life-size statue of the famed cowboy. Fort Cody is pretty easy to find – just look for the huge Buffalo Bill figure out front. On a side note, Fort Cody is also Nebraska’s largest souvenir store. Nebraska is quite proud of its heritage. Experience it all at the 12-day fest appropriately named Nebraskaland Days. You’ll see a lot of cowboy hats and boots, feast on great food, listen to concerts, watch rodeos and parades. There’s even a pageant for Miss Nebraska. Another great festival is the Kool-Aid festival. It’s true, Nebraska is the birthplace of this great summer drink. Enjoy!
