Helena became an overnight success in 1864 thanks to the discovery of gold in the aptly named Last Chance Gulch. Today it stands proud as the capital of Montana, although traces of the gold rush era can still be seen throughout the city. Take for example Reeder’s Alley. It used to be home for the many prospectors that came in hopes of finding their riches. Today it is a fantastic shopping row, filled with boutiques. The Museum of Gold was built to honor the founding fathers of the city. You’ll see gold dust and huge nuggets (not the McDonald’s kind) proudly on display. The city has many more fantastic museums as well as great art galleries. With the many lakes in the surrounding areas, Helena is also a wonderful place for fishing enthusiasts.
