The pet-friendly, 119-room Residence Inn by Marriott Jackson is designed for the longer stay business or leisure traveler. The two-story, non-smoking has studios and two-bedroom suites with separate living and sleeping areas. Items included with the room rate are high-speed Internet access, a hot breakfast buffet, local telephone calls, a manager’s reception on weekday evenings, parking and coffee available in the lobby 24/7. There are two meeting rooms for business or social functions. The larger can accommodate 30 guests. The hotel is close to downtown Jackson, the Coliseum and Jackson State University. Area landmarks and attractions include the Mississippi Opera, Rapids on the Reservoir Water Park, Jackson Zoological Park, the Davis Planetarium and the International Museum of Muslim Cultures.

Sadly, this inn is in need of some upgrading and some clients say they will not return here. Others do return because the rates are low and some employees make an effort to be helpful. Words of warning from those who stayed here: Not all the rooms have Internet access. Many complained the beer at the evening social was warm and flat. Others said the noise from the traffic and neighboring rooms made it difficult to sleep. YES, if you can handle the problems and are on a budget. All the suites have a fireplace and a kitchen with conventional oven and microwave oven, stovetop, refrigerator with icemaker, dishwasher, coffeemaker, toaster and a full set of cutlery and crockery. There is a work desk with ergonomic chair and high-speed Internet access, telephone with voicemail, pullout sofa bed, cable television with news and movie channels, pay-per-view movies, hairdryer and an iron and ironing board.

This inn has an outdoor swimming pool, whirlpool, exercise room and a sports court. There is a YMCA fitness center within walking distance. There is a 24-hour The Market on-site with a full range of snacks and beverage and the inn offers a grocery shopping service and has a list of restaurants that will deliver to the hotel. Nearby places to eat include the Bel Haven Bar and Grill, Walker’s Drive-in and an Olive Garden. The 24-hour front desk has safe deposit boxes and information on area events and attractions. Other amenities include a coin-operated laundry, business center, valet dry-cleaning, vending machines and a picnic area with a barbecue grill.
