During the Civil War Columbus was known as a hospital town. On the one hand this protected it from being attacked giving you a fantastic collection of antebellum homes. The other side to this though is that a lot of wounded soldiers were brought here and many were buried in the Friendship Cemetery. Locals wanted to do something to honor them and a group of determined ladies began to decorate the graves with flowers. This was the beginning of Memorial Day.
The Waverley Plantation Mansion is a fantastic example of the antebellum homes. In fact, this one in particular is so beautiful its one of the most photographed homes in the area.
Downtown Columbus is filled with historic buildings, including some that have been converted into great antique shops and restaurants. Nearby lies the Riverwalk and Trail, which is a beautiful path showcasing Columbus great scenery.
