It's easy to tell that the Ponchartrain Hotel was a gem in its era. Unfortunately, the hotel is in pretty bad shape. It's an old structure with numerous problems. The rooms are small but comfortable. There are plumbing and electrical problems, serious mold on the walls and ceilings (especially in then bathroom), filthy carpet and a musty smell. (I used a Glade plug-in during my stay) The staff was friendly and there were clean sheets and towels. In all fairness, I don't know how many of the hotel's problems can be attributed to Hurrican Katrina.I'm sure I won't stay at this hotel again.
MOLD - posted on 08/14/2006
The room had a very moldy smell, carpets was very dirty, and someone's old shower cap was by the bed, nut shells were behind the bed and candy wrappers. Shower curtain had mold on it. No wash cloths in room and the spare pillow in the closet had hair on it. The blanket and bedspread had stains on it. Called front dest and they could not deliver anything.

A great place - posted on 06/30/2005
. The lobby was sparkling clean and the employees couldn?t have been more helpful. We knew check-in was at 3; we asked if we could leave our bags and were informed that we could go to our room immediately. On Friday and Saturday nights, the hotel bar, which has a most gracious and friendly barkeep, includes a piano player who just stepped out of a Tennessee Williams play.If you want to stay at a hotel were you want to know what to expect up front, such as a Marriott or Embassy Suites, this isn?t the place for you. The Pontchartrain is a place for travelers, not tourists.
Happy With This Hotel - posted on 04/24/2005
After arriving in LA w/out a hotel, this hotel had a penthouse room for us. The service was very friendly. The room was enormous but smelled musty. The wood floor was dusty and coming apart. Nice view from the 11th floor. Great location in quiet area on St. Charles.

Our room was extremely small and there was a grate in the bathroom that was open to the neighboring bathroom, but otherwise the hotel was acceptable and quiet. Not for "high maintenence" travelers.
