Des Moines, a small erstwhile military post, has developed into a modern metropolis, but warm and small town atmosphere still prevails in the capital city of Iowa. Located in Polk County, the largest city in the state is the third leading insurance center of the world. One of the 50 hottest cities of America offers short commute time, eclectic recreational and cultural options, and climate-controlled skywalks linking businesses, stores, restaurants, attractions, hotels and parking garages. Numerous event centers, art galleries, golf courses, recreational trails, historical landmarks and parks enable creation of a diverse range of itineraries to match the individual taste.
The most sought after sights of the city include the Des Moines Arts Center, Blank Park Zoo, gold-domed Capitol, the State Historical Museum, Salisbury House and Living History Farms. The Des Moines Arts Center displays a priceless collection of 21st, 20th and 19th century artworks. A short trail, in the famous Living History Farms, traces farming history of Iowa spanning three different periods. In this open-air museum, daily life of the Native Americans and settlers of 19th –century is replicated. The visitors can also participate in various games and educational activities for fun. For more action, play a game of golf in the 18-hole A.H. Blank Golf Course, which has Uplink Global Positioning System (GPS). You can join citizens of Des Moines, who have special interest in highly competitive home games, to watch sporting events. But there are no “big league” teams in the city.
Colorful annual events draw huge crowds throughout the year. Artists from across the country exhibit their works at the Des Moines Art Festival in June. Here, you can appreciate and buy art, sample creations of food vendors and be part of entertainment activities. In August, the world-renowned Iowa State Fair, a 10-day annual industrial and agricultural exposition, is organized on the beautiful rolling State Fair Campgrounds featuring small wildlife, woodland flora and shady century-old trees. You can camp on the grounds to experience entertaining art and livestock shows, musical performances; and freedom of woodlands.
What if the city wraps up in darkness after sunset? Do not worry! Visit Court Avenue, the hub of vivacious nightlife scene. There are a plenty of dance clubs, comedy clubs, live music clubs, theatres, Karaoke bars and sports bars to have a fun-filled and relaxing night. Dance the night away in Club Iguana Jakes and Coconut Joe’s; and have a hearty laugh in Funny Bone.

Cultural diversity of the city is mirrored in an array of cuisines, including Italian, Chinese, Thai, Mexican and American. Vegetarian, corn-fed beef and seafood, all is available for a wide range of prices. Casuals are okay while dining at budget and mid-range eateries but high-end restaurants expect well-dressed guests. If you are going out for a date or to celebrate a special occasion, do not forget to reserve a table in advance. Travelers can enjoy personalized service at one-owner Corner Cafes. Try some homemade brews. Although the city abounds in eateries, Noah’s Ark Restaurant & Lounge, Stella’s Blue Sky Diner, DuBay’s and Tursi’s Latin King Restaurant are some of the most frequented ones. Foodies should also taste local food at Taste of Des Moines festival, generally held in July every year.
Every week, the vibrant Downtown Farmers Market offers fresh fruits and vegetables, ethnic cuisine, handcrafted jewelry & sculptures, fresh juices and much more. For a wholesome family entertainment and holiday, visit Adventure Land, the largest family resort in the state. This amusement park offers thrill rides, roller coasters, children’s rides, great water rides and cultural shows, such as dance, song and live music performances. Gamblers would love Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino.
This versatile destination has a lot to keep you occupied. Simply sit and watch others performing; stroll through museums and art centers; treat your taste buds with varied cuisine; or go a step further and play a game of golf, try camping / cycling recreational trails. Choice is yours.
