St. Augustine has played an important role in the US' recent history as well. Dr. Martin Luther King and the civil rights movement gained much attention here during the 1960s. Interestingly enough the legendary Ray Charles attended the St. Augustine School for the Deaf and Blind. It was here that he learned how to play a number of instruments and how to write music.
