If you’re a hopeless romantic or in a relationship with one, love ruffles and lace, or want to be surrounded by chintz fabric and heavy antique furniture, Denver’s Castle Marne is the place for you. The “Bed and Breakfast Inn” operates out of a castle-like stone building erected near downtown Denver in 1889. The entire inn is lavished with period antiques and careful reproductions to bathe the lobby, parlor and guest rooms in Old World romance. Afternoon tea is served in the ornate parlor at check-in time. Candlelight dinners, a hearty breakfast, six-course dinners and over-the-top wedding packages are among the Castle’s signature attractions. The Inn hosts nine guest rooms -- some include Jacuzzis or private balconies overlooking a tree-lined street of mansions, while all include ornate wooden or heavy metal beds with more floral-print fabric than a Laura Ashley store.
Does HotelsByCity recommend this hotel?
Honeymooners, older couples celebrating anniversaries and other romantics love this place with all its ornate, floral-patterned elegant ambiance. But for others, it can be overwhelming or claustrophobic. Castle Marne’s honeymoon and other romantic weekend packages receive rave reviews and have won several awards. This is not the place to stay for active fun. There are puzzles in the parlor, but no television. The inn is located near downtown Denver and its nightlife offerings as well as the growing restaurant rows of east 16th and 17th avenues, but adjacent East Colfax Avenue remains one of the city’s dicier neighborhoods at night. No young children; no pets; no smoking and no functioning fireplaces, by order of the local fire code. Reservations come with a $20 cancellation fee, higher if it’s less than 48 hours from arrival. The nine guest rooms range from the cozy Melissa’s Room, named for the propietor’s daughter and including her Raggedy Ann dolls, to Colonel Platt’s Room with its excess of cabbage rose prints, to the airy Tower Room and elegant John T. Mason Room. The Presidential Suite offers three rooms restored to look as they were more than a century ago with gentleman’s “hat box” dresser, brass bed and lace-covered French doors.
Castle Marne offers complete Old World graciousness, including attentive personal service such as a basket of freshly baked muffins to take for a departure too early for the gourmet breakfast and a willingness to entertain guests with the inn’s entire fascinating history. Wallpaper, linens and china from England are used throughout the inn. Armoires, large dressers, claw-foot tubs, a pull-chain toilet and fluffy comforters provide a feeling of being at great-grandma’s. Guest’s can also step back into the 21st Century to use the inn’s wireless internet and fax. Castle Marne does not sell alcoholic beverages, but you can bring your own and they'll serve it at dinner.
Castle Marne is located just blocks from the heart of downtown Denver. From Denver International Airport, take Pena Boulevard South to Interstate 70 Westbound. Exit at Colorado Blvd. (Colorado Highway 2) and go south to East Colfax Avenue. Turn right onto Colfax Ave. Travel 1.2 miles and turn right onto Race Street. Castle Marne will be on the right side of Race St.
