Located at the convenient intersection of Powell Street and California Street, guests step out the door and can catch either cable car lines. Look to the right to see Fisherman's Wharf in the distance, the left towards Union Square, up the hill the Mark Hopkins and Fairmont hotels of famous Nob Hill and down California for China Town and the Financial District. The University Club is private, has reciprocal arrangements with athletic clubs around the country and has 16 rooms available even for non-members. Of course the athletic facility adjacent has squash courts, fitness center, lounge areas, men and women's locker rooms with all the deluxe amenities. Hotel guests get full access to the athletic facility open 6 a.m.-10 p.m. daily. The hotel building is rich in hardwoods and period decor fitting early 20th century. The ambience is warm and surprisingly you feel like this is your home away from home with very little of the crowds and distractions found at a much larger hotel.
Does HotelsByCity recommend this hotel?
If one is looking for a unique San Francisco experience, this quiet hotel and athletic club in the center of it all, is for you and your family. Relax after a long day meeting or being a tourist in the excellent athletic club steam room or dry sauna. Be sure to ask a lot of questions as the club has a feel of a club and being a non-member a lot of information isn't automatic.
The complimentary daily continental breakfast is above average too. The restaurant and bar on the fourth floor has the feel of an old gentleman's professional club too. If you're a graduate of a Big 10 university, you'll proudly see your school's flag flown out front of this hotel. Walk west up the hill or ride the cable car to Grace Cathedral and walk the labrynth. The city can be yours from this very central, quiet, private address. Read our customer reviews?
All rooms are non-smoking with single and double queen bed rooms that are available. Rooms have coffee makers, 25 inch remote televisions with cable, hair dryers, shower-tub combination, ADA accessible with elevator. Bring your music CD's with a deluxe clock radio at your bedside. Rooms facing east have a great view of the city skyline including the famous Transamerica pyramid.
You'll need to ask for ice from the front desk attendant, but on this stay, this guest was pleased to find my room stocked when returning from a business day. The club's front door is secure and often you'll have to be buzzed in by the 24 hour front desk clerk. If using the athletic facility, you'll need to get a scanner key for the front door. Walk a block up California and make your way to "The Top Of The Mark" in the Mark Hopkins Hotel. Unparalleled views from this famous Nob Hill landmark. The music is great at the "Top" and one can dance and imagine Cary Grant sitting by the window in the movie "North by Northwest"
The best way to get to the hotel in this compact city is to catch the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) from either the San Franciso or Oakland Airports.
Get off Bart at the Powell Street Station, ride the escalator to street level and catch the Powell Street Cable car to California.
From Oakland Airport one way fare is only $6.70.
One could also catch a taxi at Powell as there is a good possibility of long lines waiting to catch the cable car.
