Customer Reviews for Cartwright Hotel On Union Square

Nice 1st Visit - posted on 06/03/2007

This was my first visit to San Francisco and it certainly won't be my last! The Cartwright was in a great location and was a great value for the price. Rooms are small but very adequate and clean. Most of the staff were very friendly and helpful. They made several trip and shuttle reservations for me and saved me a lot of time. The free breakfast was also very nice! Would definitely stay here again...located near the theater district, China Town, and Union Square.

very nice and clean charming little hotel, great location; short walking distance to union square, bart station on powell, cable car, chinatown (a must in SF!), and good entertainment. rooms are quite small, but very clean, and the entire personel was very nice, helpful, and discreet. i've missed the vine tasting, but the breakfast was ok. will definitely come back!

30 seconds to the cable car, 30 seconds to Union Square, offers a complimentary BIG breakfast and complimentary (free-flowing) wine in the evening. Also clean and comfortable!! Awesome for the price!

Great find! - posted on 11/11/2006

Older hotel with small rooms, and only the 1st and 2nd floor rooms have A/C in the rooms, but everything else about the hotel was great!!! Friendly front desk staff. Bed, Towels, Breakfast, Free Wifi, all perfect!! Great find!

Can't beat the convenience of walking to everything downtown. Clean and charming decor. Ask for the King room - it's larger and worth the upgrade from Queen. Good selection at breakfast.

This was a great location for my first time in San Francisco, price/cont breakfast/wine hour were all great. Walking dist to Chinatown/shopping/can take the cable car anywhere. King corner bed was comfy. Only downfalls were: the broken heater (requested turn off by front desk) and 3am street noise. Despite this, hotel was nice for location/accessability. Suggest 3-day cable car pass. Great fun at the Starlight Room across the street at Sir Francis drake :). Will return to this hotel.

Comfortable Stay - posted on 11/19/2005

Old hotel, small rooms - but everything they can do to make the most of it. Big fluffy towels, top quality shampoo etc., squeaky clean room and bathroom, and absolutely superb service. Breakfast is generous and reasonably varied. Superb location! Go out the door and jump on the cable car!

There was only one full size bed in an extremely small room. I confirmed my reservations for two beds, but there are only two rooms in the hotel like that.

A good value if...... - posted on 07/26/2005

This hotel is a good value for the money if you are not spoiled by newer mega-chain, mega-service hotels. The rooms are small (really small). Their is no room service, but plenty of eating places nearby. The free breakfast was truly great and saved us much money. For the most part the staff was excellant. It was really easy to access public transportation, so be sure to buy a Muni Pass or City Pass. DON"T bring a car! Overall, a good value. I would stay here again.

Excellent value - posted on 07/13/2005

My friend and I were impressed by the exceptionally friendly staff at the Cartwright -- they were consistently warm and helpful. We enjoyed the free wine reception in the late afternoon, where we got to hear a live string quartet. The rooms were clean and well appointed. The location was ideal -- we walked everywhere! One frustration: parking ended up costing over $30 for one night, because we exceeded the 24-hour time frame at the garage.

old fashioned but with some style - posted on 05/22/2005

The cartwright has the nicest staff of any hotel we have stopped at in the last few years. If you are after a modern hotel with huge rooms and facilities this isnt it. What you do get is a clean vintage hotel with a great location , tiny bathrooms , great staff, free wine in the afternoon a surprisingly well heeled clientele, mostly returnees. One tip try and get a corner room, more windows and light.
