quirky yet great - posted on 03/19/2006
Initially thrown by small room, with mis-matched 1970's furniture/decor, and view of vent. Remembered we'd only paid $* and realized room was big enough (king bed, chair, ottomon, table, closet, good-sized bathroom and still some space). Was very clean and all decor/furniture was in excellent condition. Bathroom was very nice, bed comfortable, location excellent, facilities (business center/concierge) excellent, outdoor pool area lovely (if cold). Pay $40 more for a "club room" (larger and more modern), but we loved our quirky room. Didn't dine, went to Chinatown/Russian Hill
HUBBUB - posted on 06/02/2007
It was great to be in the hubbub of San Francisco, a block from Union Sq., plenty of shopping and wonderful places to eat. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the staff was friendly and helpful

great for the money - posted on 05/04/2007
The staff was very friendly and helpful from the front desk, to the concierge, to the bell staff, to housekeeping. The hotel is clean, comfortable and secure. I got a great rate. Absolutely great location for accessing busses, trolleys, or Bart. Also, endless options for shopping and dining. It is pretty inundated with tourists; but that is due to the central location. I would reccomend this hotel to just about anyone. There are no frills (Spa, etc); but given the abundance of great places in the area, they will not be missed. No complaints.
Excellent price, but noisy - posted on 04/24/2007
I generally enjoyed my stay at the Handlery. My room was clean and comfortable and the staff was helpful. The view from my room was of a very grimy area with peeling paint and a homeless person's camp complete with bucket toilet -- very unpleasant. Street noise was very loud at all hours, but turning out the air conditioning helped cover this. For the price and if you keep the AC on and blinds closed, this is a great deal.
Love the Handlery - posted on 04/18/2007
I've stayed @ many hotels in Union Square some expensive others not. The Handlery is located right in the heart of Union Square. Easy access to shopping, entertainment, and restaurants. Rooms are a bit small, most hotels in SF have small rooms unless you're willing to pay for a suite. In spite of the size, the rooms are clean, comfortable, and when I had a problem with my room (the bathroom had a shower and not a tub) they quickly switched us to another room. Valet service brought our car around in less than 15 min., and the front desk provided excellent service. Great hotel for the price.

We enjoy this hotel and have stayed there before. However, the bill of $82.08 to keep our car there for two nights, caught me by surprise this time. Also, we were to have had a room with one queen and were given a room with two VERY small double beds. Everything is clean and the location is great. It is a good place to stay
Nice hotel in great location - posted on 03/21/2007
I was looking for a hotel that was in desirable location and within walking distance of BART. The Handlery fit bill well. Only three blocks to Powell St station. Room was relatively inexpensive. Of course view was alley and it was near the elevator. Wasn't too noisy though. Didn't spend a lot of time in room. Pool was out of service. Amazing that an old downtown hotel has a pool in the first place. Lots of nice places to eat within a block.
Nice hotel great location. - posted on 02/07/2007
I've stayed here a few times and really love it. The place is so close to everything in SF, the rooms are clean and the staff, especially concierge, are awesome!
Handlery Hotel - posted on 02/01/2007
No need for rental car if you're staying here. Everything is within walking distance, from Union Square to the Cable Cars. Being right in the middle of everything, be prepared for noisy nights. From sirens throughout the night, to transit bells ringing and garbage trucks in the wee morning hours, its the price you have to pay for the convenient location.
Used to be a great hotel - posted on 12/13/2006
but not anymore! Staff's attitude needs a huge improvement, the rooms are run down and parking is $41 a day which takes you 45 minutes to get your car. By the way my rental car for the weekend was only $68. You can imagine my surprise when I paid $82 for parking. Ive stayed 3 times before but never will again
Thin Windows in the heart of Union Square - posted on 12/07/2006
Very Thin windows allow for a ton of street noise, even on the highest floor. Rude front desk staff, concierge leaves at 5pm. Hotel is musty and smelled like a nursing home. Tiny, tiny elevators. On the positives: it is clean and in a great location.
Excellent Proximity - posted on 11/16/2006
Love the closeness to public transportation, staff was wonderful, rooms are clean but somewhat small and poor view, but get out and enjoy the city.
Great Location - posted on 11/14/2006
This is the perfect hotel for shopping and sightseeing in downtown SFO. It is steps away from Union Square yet is very affordable for the area. We were able to stop in and drop off packages and take a rest and then be on our way again in short order. The room was comfortable and the shower was great--lots of hot water. We are liked it enough to return in a couple of weeks to finish up our Christmas shopping at the world-class stores/boutiques that are close to the hotel.

Great location. Very small rooms. Would highly reccomend Daily Grill next door. Hotel staff not very helpful/friendly. Will stay elsewhere next time.
Great hotel! - posted on 09/28/2006
More than what we expected! We booked this hotel with a flight and the price was incredible. We got a top (8th) floor room with a view but it was a smoking room. Very clean, nice soap/shampoo. Concierge was very helpful. Good location near Chinatown and Folsom Street Fair. I would definitely stay here again!
The Old Bait and Switch - posted on 09/08/2006
I booked my trip and prepaid for a Standard Room with a Queen bed. When I checked in, put me in a small room with a small bed. It took some persuasion, and returning to the Front Desk to show her my reservation, to convince her to give me the kind of room I had paid for. She was not pleasant. I did not appreciate the slick attempt to give me a lesser room - bait and switch.
Great Place to Stay - posted on 09/08/2006
Great location. Great room. Very clean. Very friendly staff. Shower water pressure was only drawback.
Great location, but not-so-great customer service! - posted on 09/07/2006
When we checked in, we were not told anything, and had to ask about things that should be mentioned, like how to get to the valet parking service that we purchased. We would not have know-nor were there signs-saying that it was down the street around the corner and half-way down the block behind the hotel. A different reception person did extend our check-out time when we asked, as a courtesy which was nice. But check-in to the hotel and checking out of valet was a little stressful.

The location of this hotel, the staff, and the cleanliness of this hotel was superb. The facilities were extremely well maintained for the age. Would definitely stay again. Was close to everything, and the area was so energetic and dynamic.
Location, Location, Location - posted on 08/25/2006
The Hotel was excellant, We had a small room, but the price was right. Everything you needed was within walking distance, Cable cars, dozens of restaurants, BART, Muni, Union Square and plenty of vagrants(harmless). The street performers were quite entertaining. The Hotel staff was more than helpful
Best location, value and staff in San Fran - posted on 08/12/2006
Upon arrival, we were helped with securing our luggae since we arrived too early for check-in. The staff was great. Our room was great. The location was just right to see all the different attractions. The public transportation around the holet is easy and inexpoensive to use. Thanks to all the friendly and helpful staff. You made our trip very comfortable.

Booked room four months ago, only to get the worst room I have ever been in and they could have cared less. a/c did not work, and was told "that's the best you can get" moved to another room, with twin beds and NO smoking, after we requested one, fours months ago, and was told "That's all we have" Never Again
Harping in SF - posted on 07/10/2006
The American Harp Society met in San Francisco - and the Handlery, across the street from the convention hotel, was a great place to stay. The rates were excellent, room was clean and well appointed, and we enjoyed the pool for exercise after too much sitting!
Wonderful Surprise - posted on 07/08/2006
A bit leary of what to expect, as the price was so reasonable for S.F., I was pleasantly surprised. An old hotel with charm, that it was, very accommodating staff, the location, the best! My only complaint was the $42.00 per day Parking Fee; however, I will return, a great bargain in the city of San Francisco.
Wonderful Stay - posted on 07/06/2006
My wife and I pulled into Union Square after a long haul from the Central Valley to celebrate one year of marriage. I was a bit concerned if this hotel was going to be nice since the price was low. To our surprise, the Handlery turned out to be a wonderful experience. The staff was very helpful (even mailing to us the pillows we left behind). The rooms were nicely decorated and very clean. We truly enjoyed ourselves. The only problem was the very loud garbage trucks that worked on the streets at 4:30 am for nearly 2 hours. Noisy!
Cold Shower/Expensive Parking - posted on 07/05/2006
Positives: Room was unique in style. Location was was in the heart of Union Square. Negatives: Parking was $41 per day. Yes, that's right, per day. Also, when I woke to take a shower in the morning, I couldn't get any water that was hotter than luke warm. When I conveyed this to the staff, they couldn't have cared less and wished me a "good day". On my next trip to S.F. I will try a different hotel.
overall experience - posted on 06/19/2006
This hotel is extremely clean. The hotel staff for the majority are friendly and very helpful especially if you let them know it is your first time to visit. On our first night we had a city view room and was subject to street noise and sirens all night, but the staff gladly moved us the next morning. This may have been due to a bad window in the room. The location is excellent for muni and trolly as well as shopping. There are vagrants in the area, but they seem to be harmless.
Very Good - posted on 06/19/2006
Excellent staff, fabulous location, nice clean hotel, value for money. Streetside rooms are a bit noisy. There's a Daily Grill in the building which serves good food (huge portions), while not cheap, it certainly couldn't be described as expensive. Good fun staff in bar.
A great place! - posted on 06/08/2006

Great location - posted on 05/29/2006
If you are looking for a good hotel value near Union Square and Chinatown, this is it. Great staff, especially the parking garage (no, I never heard that before, either) and the price is right. It is a partially updated old hotel (baths, etc. are fine) but if you want wall-to-wall luxury, look elsewhere and prepare to spend another $300 per night.
Great Location - posted on 04/04/2006
Step right out the door and you are in the City. Walk to Union Square, Theater, China Town, resturants, Trolley, Bart. Get an inside room (pool) or the traffic noise will keep you awake all night.

we had the parking package which saved some money. we stayed in the old part of the hotel the room was large but the shower was the size of a submarine shower and the windows had no railing.

You guys do a super job with the hotel and your staff seems to bust their butts to answer questions, make things better and give information over and over again with a smile. I have refered several clients to you when staying in SF and I always tell them how to get to the Buena Vista to drink some of that Irish Coffee. my best regards Phil Colbaugh
