This is a nice European style hotel in a great location. The restaurant is quite good and offers room servie as a bonus. Nice nightly wine reception.
elegance of a bygone era - posted on 03/29/2007
A visit to the past with elegant club mood, artsy decor, a great library/bar, and close to everything in Union Square. The staff were classy and attentive, the rooms small but well appointed, with Jazz CDs on the bedside table, comfy bed, nice bedding, large bathroom. The TV looked old, but I never turned it on. The restaurant was pretty good. I loved it and will stay again. Felt like I walked off the street back to 1940. A nice break from all the "resorts" that look the same.

My first time in San Fran and didn't expect such small rooms. I suppose that is normal for old buildings. Lots of charm but if I had a choide to find a larger room, I would have. Also, would have chosen to NOT be on street side. Very noisy. But cute hotel.
A pleasant surprise - posted on 11/12/2006
Because the Hotel Rex is quite inexpensive for its superb location, I didn't expect to be as delighted as I was. The decor is lovely--beautiful colors and fabrics in the room, wonderful original art throughout the hotel, comfortable, attractive lobby and sitting area downstairs. Though the rooms are quite small, they are well organized and well appointed so that they seem larger. The bathroom is quite adequate in size and well stocked. The staff is knowledgeable and helpful. We will definitely return to the Hotel Rex!

The Hotel Rex had a very courteous staff. The room was adorable and jazz music was playing when I entered. They left chocolates on my pillow every night. The cafe was excellent. I would stay there again in a heart beat.

The Hotel Rex is an older hotel with good service, central location (Union Square) but few annenties. Seems geared for business travellers who want a clean quiet room and little else. Comfortable bed and clean room. Tastefully decorated, floors in halls and elevator could be cleaner. Would consider a stay again but only for a couple of days, it is not a place I would want to spend a week at.

Perfectly fit our needs ~ we were out most of the day but could come back to a very quaint, safe, quiet, and CLEAN hotel room. Very accommodating with iron, dry cleaning service, robes, stereo in addition to all other basic hotel necessities. Loved the orange and mahogany colors throughout the hotel. And who couldn't love a complimentary glass of wine upon arrival! Great lounge/bar equipped with mini-library. Interior designing reminded me of the French styles! Centrally located to shops, bars, restuarants, bus stops. Would definitely stay there again!

Incredibly convenient and very charming. Congenial bar/lobby area surrounded by books for every taste. One could curl up there for days and browse the books. Sort of south of France color scheme with Chagall-like drawings. Nice restaurant. Staff was charming and helpful. I would defeintely stay there again. Also just two blocks from Union Square.

We had a wonderful time here. Our room was kitschy and cozy. The nightly wine reception was a classy, welcoming experience. *** the bartender treated us very well. A first-class experience in the heart of San Francisco.

The Hotel Rex is a quaint and cozy environment doing its best to maximize a relatively small space in San Francisco. The staff is pleasant and helpful and the accommodations are nice. Particularly convenient is the free access to computer and printer in the "study" off the lobby area. The room service menu and prices are quite reasonable and the food was very nice. I would recommend the hotel to anyone interested in a charming, comfortable and reasonable place to stay.

We found the location to be great - right up the block from Union Square for shopping, dining, and access to the Powell Street cable cars and MUNI/BART systems. The room was comfortable and clean - not super upscale, but nice. The staff were extremely helpful with directions and local recommendations. They offer a study with free computer access, and free wi-fi in the lobby. Overall, I'd really recommend the hotel (especially at the price we got

Hotel was very clean. Staff was friendly and helpful. Cables car line right outside of hotel, Union square two blocks down. Room and hotel decorated very artsy. A/C, fridge, small room but very nice.

Clean, quiet, comfortable rooms. Great location. Nice wine reception. Friendly staff but not good with recommendations. Room was spotless, had A/C & was super quiet. Great deal, too. Good restaurant.

Very nice hotel. Friendly front desk. Complimentary glass of wine. Great location. Wish room was bigger as we felt cramped - reminds us of a European room. Terrific location - right where all the action is.

The staff was very curtious, knowledgable and went out of their way to help us find great places to eat. They allowed us to check into our room 3 hrs. adhead of check-in time, which was wonderful. The decor of the hotel is very well done. It also has a well-stocked library, and comfortable little cafe. The rooms were well appointed and comfortable, although the walls seemed "a bit" thin. Overall, it was a good value and well worth the trip!
