Morning front desk staff need attitude adjustment - posted on 01/03/2007
Morning front desk staff has major attitude problems. We had to complain several times to get things right. Hotel requires a credit card at check-in. If you don't have one you are screwed. They couldn't even take one (my mom's) over the phone. They claimed this was impossible. What are they living in the 1920's?!!! The front desk claimed that he could not take the credit card without a signature. How do people buy things over the internet?!!!

This hotel has a great location, and it stops there, beds are uncomfortable, rooms r small, heating system doesn't work
gotta love the location - posted on 10/22/2006
Our stay at The Chancellor couldn't have been better...well, maybe a bigger bahroom would have been nice, but for the price, location, cleanliness, and comfortable beds, this is a winner.
Feel good experience - posted on 09/30/2006
This hotel was right in the heart of downtown by Union Square but had a feel of small town comfort and care. The staff went out of their way to be accommodating! Everything was clean and the restaurant food was fresh and well presented.

The hotel was right next to Union Square and the cable car line, which was awesome. The bus was super easy to navigate also. The rooms are kinda small, we had a room with 2 twin beds, but it was fine. The hotel staff were very nice and in general I had yet another wonderful SanFran experience.
Safe and Clean! - posted on 09/05/2006
Great Union Square location- 4 blocks from BART. Safe, friendly, and clean! Rooms are a bit small. If you want more dining options I recommend a different neighborhood, but there are good diners and cafes less than a block away (Chinatown is somewhat close but quite a walk uphill). Only complaint was that the heater only works at a certain temp and it was a bit chilly! Also make sure you call the hotel to ask for desired beds, as we ended up pushing two twins together. A bit touristy but not as bad as Fisherman's Wharf, and worth the central location and easy access.
Fine place to stay. - posted on 09/03/2006
The hotel is a bit worn around the edges but the location is exceptional. The Chancellor turned out to be just what we needed and nothing more. This hotel had the friendliest, most helpful staff that I have ever experienced at a hotel in a large US city, by far.
Loved It - posted on 08/12/2006
I stayed at the Chancellor for 6 days. The location was incredible, the rooms were excellent, and the price cant be beat. I highly recommend this hotel.
Small but Comfy - posted on 07/13/2006
We spent 4 days at the Chancellor and found it extremely convenient due to it closeness to the trolley line. Rooms are small but cute. Nice selection of pillows and bathspa services. Staff were friendly and courteous. Free internet access in lobby and delicious cookies to welcome you in the afternoons. Took the advice of another reviewer and had delicious meals next door at Sears Fine Food -a place everyone visiting should eat.

Loved "The Chancellor". The rooms were clean and more spacious than we expected. Very comfortable bed, free internet access, free coffee and cookies all day and night. Great location, great staff and an excellent price for all this. Would stay ther again and recommend it to anyone.
Charming - posted on 07/05/2006
We moved to this hotel after being unhappy at a chain hotel on Lombard Street. The Chancellor was heaven compared to it. Staff extremely polite and helpful - at all hours. The location was excellent, just a short walk from the BART station. We found an excellent Indian restaurant by just walking around the block, as well as the Biscuit and Blues music venue. The room was cozy and charming in its older, European style. We loved the deep bathtub, as well as the umbrella provided in the closet (it was rainy when we were there).

The hotel is on the older side but the location is excellent. There is a cable car stop right outside the hotel and Chinatown is just a couple of blocks away, plus all the shopping in Union Square. The rooms were clean and comfortable, might be small for some but we didn't spend much time in the room. There were a few services that added a nice touch, a pillow menu, a spa bath menu and room service is offered. The hotel offers off site parking for under $30, a good price in San Francisco. The only negative comment was from my girlfriend who thought the staff was a little inattentive.
with best for less - posted on 05/28/2006
Service , amenties, location and upkeep are all superior. Price is low moderate for Powell on Union Square. Shopping, restaurants and attractions such as Chinatown and theater are right at hand. Anything else can use public transport or in and out or valet garage 3 min away. 3* at 1* price.
Good price, great location, great staff - posted on 05/16/2006
All staff were very friendly and helpful. Bartender was especially helpful. Room was clean and neat although not large. Can see Union Square, and good places to eat and shop from the front door. Many art galleries nearby. Will be back.
Best you can Get! - posted on 05/02/2006
We could not have gotten a better hotel for this price if we tried! The staff was outstanding. The service was great -- even the bartenders made you feel special. I would stay at the Chancellor every time I'm in San Francisco - especially around Christmas!!

You simply cannot beat The Chancellor Hotel for location, affordability, and service. Located just off Union Square, The Chancellor is surrounded by fabulous restaurants and shopping. The cable car stop is steps from the front door which makes sightseeing convenient and easy. The hotel staff is attentive and friendly. The rooms are clean, cozy, and comfortable. The Chancellor Hotel is an unbeatable place to stay when visiting San Francisco.
Very Disappointed - posted on 01/15/2006
The elevators and rooms are very small. A sign in the bathroom says you will pay if you overflow the bathtub. There is no air conditioning. It is very noisy all night long. And, my experience with the staff was not pleasant. The ceiling fan looked like it could fall on the bed at any minute. I did not feel comfortable or safe the entire time I was there.
Great Location - posted on 09/26/2005
The location is perfect - right on Union Square. The rooms are fairly small, but not too bad. The bathrooms are very small. This is a 3 star hotel and is just what you might expect - nothing fancy, but very comfortable. I have no complaints. I would skip the breakfast at the hotel. Sears Fine Food next door is much better for a similar price.
Beautiful, Great Location - posted on 07/06/2005
This is a beautiful hotel, Edwardian, and very comfortable. We were there during the Chinese New Year and the parade stops next to the hotel. It is a great location for a great price.
Great find - posted on 05/14/2005
This is one of those great finds that you search for in an area that is usually very expensive. We were in town for a last minute business trip. Being self-employed we don't have a corporate expense account to pay for travel costs. This is a reasonably priced and very clean facility in a great area. The hotel provides workout rivileges at the Westin Hotel in the next block. We couldn't help but laugh at the fact that the guests at that very expensive hotel had to pay $12.00 a day to use the facilities that we got to use for free.
Very nice - posted on 05/09/2005
The hotel is convienently located right off Union Square. The location for the price was fantastic. The hotel was very nice and very clean with a friendly staff

My wife and I came and stayed 3 nights for our 17th anniversary. The hotel gave us complimentary champagne in our room when we checked in. Nice touch! A solid 3 star hotel with terrific service. Convenient for Union Square shopping, dining, entertaining! We will return.
