Huntington Beach is probably better known as 'Surf City USA'. This fabulous Californian getaway can be found along the Pacific Ocean and is only 40 miles away from Los Angeles. This ideal setting also makes it an easy destination to visit, whether you spend your entire holiday here or are just passing through.
There are over eight miles of pristine beaches for you to explore, although most people spend their time in the ocean. Why? Well, there's a reason why Huntington is called 'Surf City USA'. Each August thousands of surfer dudes arrive for the U.S. Open of Surfing. Whether you actually know what you are doing or just love to watch, this is one event you won't want to miss. Can't make it during the summer? Visit during the month of December and enjoy the Cruise of Lights. As you make your way around the harbor islands you'll be treated to a colorful display of Christmas lights. Although surfing is the name of the game here, this city also attracts pro Volleyball players, skateboarders and paintball enthusiasts. Ultimately, Huntington Beach is a place to get out and just have some fun in the sun. Those who prefer to lounge on the beach will appreciate the shower and restroom facilities, nearby restaurants and the top notch lifeguards (for their life saving skills of course).
Not only are there eight miles of beach for you to explore, but there is also a great eight-mile trail ideal for joggers, bikers and walkers. Lush forests surround Huntington Beach's Central Park. Inside you will find a private library, disc golf course and a few restaurants. This area though is ideal for equestrian enthusiasts and is a great place to go on a trail ride. Prefer to go bird watching? Then make your way to the Bolsa Chica State Ecological Reserve. Those looking for some fun can take a short drive to Disneyland's attractions, Six Flags Magic Mountain, Universal Studios or Legoland.
This city's legendary trademark is the Huntington Pier, one of the largest public piers on the West coast. Filled with activity, little shops and the legendary Ruby's Dinner, the pier is always a great place to hang out. The views from its railings also give you an impressive look at the surfers and tides below. Downtown Huntington Beach is also a great place to spend some time. There are fantastic restaurants and nightclubs as well as a number of great stores. Don't worry if you forget your bathing suit. There are literally thousands for you to choose from. This neighborhood is also home to the Surfing Museum.
Interestingly enough, Huntington Beach was a major source of oil extraction and continues to do so, although at a much slower pace. Don't be too surprised to find a small oil rigger beside your hotel or restaurant. Although, the ocean, beaches and palm trees do a great job of distracting you from this city's side business.
Considering over 11 million visitors flock here every year, you just know that Huntington Beach is worth discovering for yourself.
