The rolling hills and fertile soil have helped make Fresno one of the best places to grow produce. In fact, this area is known as the Raisin Capital of the World because of the huge quantities of dried grapes that hail from this region. Of course, that also means this is a fantastic place to enjoy a few wine tours. Wherever you decide to explore, the scent of blossoms fill the air and orchards line the streets. Although taste testing your way through this area is reason enough to come, there are also many wonderful sites for you to enjoy.
You know you have arrived in Fresno when you see the 100-foot high water tower. Built back in 1894, it is now the city’s visitor center. One of the best times to visit Fresno is towards the end of February and throughout the month of March. It is then that the blossoms come out in full bloom. Take a ride along the Blossom Trail and enjoy seeing the impressive almond groves, peach orchards and vineyards.
Although wandering various gardens might not be your top vacation activity, the options available in Fresno just might change your idea on these green spaces. Roeding Park is home to the Fresno Zoo, the Chafee Zoological Gardens and a few lakes for you to play at. Located in Radio Park lies the Fresno Art Museum. Its rotating exhibits allow you to visit time and time again. One of the highlights you should try to see is the impressive Rhythms of Art. The Shinzen Japanese Garden can be found within the Woodward Region Park. This impressive, yet tranquil place is filled with exotic plants and flowers. It is also a great outing on your wallet since the entrance fee is very cost efficient. If you only have time for one garden though, I would venture to say that the Forestiere Underground Gardens should be that one. The tunnels that exist below the ground are actually full of natural light, thanks to the ingenuity of the creator, Baldasare Forestiere. Years of hard work are evident as you wander through the tunnels. In fact, there are some paths that run hundreds of feet long. The trees may seem like small shrubs when above ground but the base runs well below. You will also find a pair of bedrooms, courts, a chapel, gardens and much more. It truly seems to be a child’s fantasy playground that has come to life.
Those seeking a bit more physical activity can enjoy boating on the lakes, fly fishing along the rivers, skiing on the nearby Sierra Mountains or horseback riding over the beautiful trails. You will also find the Sierra National Forest and the Kings Canyon, Sequoia and Yosemite National Parks nearby. The abundance of fresh air is sure to work up an appetite. Make sure you indulge in the local produce, some of which include tomatoes, olives, grapes, plums and strawberries. Be forewarned though, once you eat these delicious and fresh treats, your store bought variety just won’t be the same.

Take a break from all that outdoor splendor and make your way to the Kearny Mansion. Earning his nickname as the Raisin King, the Kearny legacy can still be seen today as you wander through the impressive mansion. You will see his name throughout the city, a tribute to his impact on the economy of Fresno. Another home worth stopping by at is the Meux establishment. As part of the National Register of Historic Places, its history provides you with a lovely way to send a weekend afternoon.
Fresno’s Tower District is one of the trendiest this city has to offer. Its shops, restaurants and clubs offer you some of the best this city has to offer. Its focal point is the historic Tower Theatre, home to various screenings and events throughout the year. Even though Fresno provides you with numerous ways to partake in a little physical exercise, it can also be a lot of fun to watch someone else to all the work. For example, you could watch the Grizzlies in their home baseball stadium, or the Falcons play hockey on the ice. The Save Mart Center is another place to catch some action. This arena is also a fantastic concert venue. The Fresno Philharmonic is another great option for all you music enthusiasts. Performing for over 50 years, the talents showcased are a true delight.
Choose to wander the ordchards, explore the sites, or indulge on the scrumptious meals. Although Fresno is a large city, it continues to attract visitors eager to get away from the hustle and bustle. However you spend your time, Fresno is one Californian city you will come to love.
