About the Puffin Inn of Anchorage

Written by Alaska Guide (thesunnycircle).View Alaska Guide (thesunnycircle)'s Blog.

I was pleasantly surprised when I walked into the lobby of the Puffin Inn in Anchorage. The image I held in my mind was of the 50+ year old motel. That still exists, but an annex building was completed as recently as 2000, and it was lovely. The lobby and Deluxe Rooms are in the new section of the property. The lobby ceilings are high, lodge style. The center piece is a giant fireplace that looks like a great place to hang out in the winter. The other side of the lobby has cafe style tables where they serve their free hot waffle & continental breakfast. Everything looked clean and new.

The hotel is within walking distance to Lake Hood (and Lake Spenard), which is the busiest float plane base in the world. I didn't notice noise/traffic from the Main airport, but the small planes flying over head were charming. It is worth walking over to Lake Spenard Park to watch the planes taking off and landing on the lake.

Does HotelsByCity recommend this hotel?

All in all, this is a fine hotel. It is very basic, so perhaps not for everyone. The hallways are rough around the edges, but the rooms and other public spaces were clean. Upgrading to a deluxe room would be worth it for someone planning on spending a lot of time on the property. But, if you just want a safe, simple base of operations for your excursions, or if you want an inexpensive place to stay near the airport, this hotel would fill the bill. Read our customer reviews?

Puffin Inn of Anchorage Accommodations

The property has three distinct levels of accommodations.

Deluxe: The deluxe rooms are in the newest annex (completed in 2000). The rooms are very simple, but spacious and clean. The deluxe rooms have interior entrances.

Moderate: The moderate rooms have exterior entrances. These rooms are smaller, but have the same amenities as the deluxe rooms.

Original: In the oldest building, the original rooms are quite small. They were refurbished this year and, again, everything is clean and new looking. The original rooms have limited amenities.

An extra note on pets: Only certain rooms are available for pets, so there is limited availability for this service.
