Also known as the Magic City, Birmingham is a great place to visit. Situated in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama. Whether its food for your tummy or food for the soul, you’ll have a lot of options in Birmingham. With over 500 restaurants to choose from you’ll find a great place to enjoy a perfect meal. Birmingham is also home to 1,300 churches. A visit to one may get you up on your feet as you enjoy a true southern Baptist choir.
The Birmingham Museum of Art is home to many fascinating exhibits. Some of its must-sees are the large Asian art collection, the African Art display and the sculpture garden. This garden is quite unique and was designed ‘by a sculptor for sculpture’. Make sure you give yourself enough time to explore the 30,000 square feet of the multi-level paradise.
If you enjoy gardens, explore the Birmingham Botanical Gardens. You’ll find acres of wildflowers, rose gardens, and Japanese gardens. The Birmingham Zoo is also a great place to explore. Make sure you find the rare white rhino. Feel like stepping back into time? Visit the Arlington Antebellum Home and Gardens. The city’s only house that dates back before the Civil War, you’ll find a fully restored Greek revival mansion built around 1845 with antiques and decorative arts from around the world.
Need to step it up a notch? The Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame is a fantastic tribute to jazz greats that have called Alabama home. Enjoy learning about where jazz came from and where it’s going. There are also exhibits that honor jazz legends such as Nat King Cole and Lionel Hampton.
Attention shoppers. You’ll want to make time for the Riverchase Galleria. Its Alabama’s number one tourist attraction so you know it’s got merit. Not only is it home to over 200 stores and boutiques, you’ll also find a great place to eat or catch a movie. And although the shopping is amazing, the building itself is worth a visit. It’s a nine-story atrium, which features the world’s largest skylight. No worries, the changing rooms are well protected.
For somewhat of a different place to visit, you may want to explore the University of Alabama. Although visiting a campus may not be on your top 10 things to see and do on a trip, it’s an experience as you discover some of the 82 city blocks it encompasses.
Whether you stroll through the streets and stop off for a bite to eat, enjoy the sites at one of its many gardens, or learn a bit of history, you’ll love your time in Birmingham.
