The island of Phuket is one of the many fantastic Thailand sites that are worth discovering. Although it is Thailand's largest island it is in fact quite small and that means you can discover much of it without having to waste a lot of time getting to and from the sites. Phuket is quite a lovely island where mountains and beaches abound. Although much of the island's coast was affected by the infamous 2004 tsunami you'll be hard pressed to find any lasting effects, especially in the tourist zones.

Phuket is known for its beaches, water activities and resorts and it has definitely been discovered. Thus, you'll find it packed full of tourists and tourist-type attractions. However, this does add to the charm of the island. It might be hard to find some peace and quiet but one thing you can be sure of is that you'll never be bored.

It is worth mentioning that Phuket Island is home to the city/town of Phuket. Calling it a city is a bit of a stretch although it is home to many of the island's locals. Most tourists don't visit here for long but they do take the time to wander the temples and museums. It seems though that most come to do some shopping. Chinatown's Thanon Thalang is an absolute must as it features a great selection of shops. The Night Bazaar is also worth experiencing, especially if you are on the hunt for a deal.

The island of Phuket tends to attract beach bums eager to experience the coast. In fact, most visitors here come for the sand and the night scene. There are some sites and activities worth mentioning though. The Wat Chalong Buddhist temple can be found on the south end of the island. The Gibbon Rehabilitation Project is a wonderful animal sanctuary located by the Bang Pae waterfall. Or, you could go for an elephant ride with a tour group and experience this new way of travel.

But again, most come for the beaches and Patong Beach is definitely one of its most popular. Others worth visiting include Kata Beach, Bang Tao Beach, Karon Beach and Kata Noi Beach. Please note though that this area can have very strong currents and it is best to pay attention to the flags posted on the beach and simply play it safe. At the end of a fun, and sun, filled day you can live it up at night when the clubs and lounges open their doors. Those looking for some quiet time can relax at a restaurant and enjoy the local cuisine.

Phuket is a great island worth exploring and although many have already discovered it, it is worth discovering it for yourself.
