Pretoria is quite beautiful anytime of the year but is especially nice during the spring when there are thousands of Jacaranda trees in full bloom. Not only is the entire city filled with purple but the blossoms also give off a beautiful aroma. Enjoy a nice long walk along the beautiful Church Street. As the longest urban street in all of South Africa, you’ll have plenty of time to enjoy the sites that surround you, including the Jacaranda trees. The Union Buildings, which are used by the South African government, sit atop Meintjies Kop and give you a wonderful view of Pretoria. The grounds that surround it are a great place to go for a nice walk as well. There’s also a large amphitheatre so if you’re here at the right time, it’s a real treat to enjoy a concert.
The historic center of the city is Church Square. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the statue of Paul Kruger, Boer leader and President of South Africa. The buildings around this square are quite beautiful. The Old Capitol Theatre, the General Post Office and the Tudor Chambers are only some of the great buildings to see. One of its most well known sites is the Palace of Justice, which was made famous during the Rivonia Trial. It was during this time that Nelson Mandela and other liberation freedom people were charged with treason.
You know how you’re told over and over again to drink milk because it strengthens your bones? Here’s one more reason to believe that it does. The Kruger House, built for Paul Kruger, had cement mixed with milk rather than water because the cement was of poorer quality. So, milk was used to help strengthen it. This house was also one of the first to have electricity. A tour through here showcases beautiful furnishings and interesting gifts he received during his presidency. If you enjoy the finer things in life, you’ll be happy to know that Pretoria was the location for the Cullinan Diamond, one of the largest gem diamonds ever found. Keep your eyes open when you visit the gem stores for the rock that suites you the best. Prefer to see other natural wonders? The National Zoological Gardens is a fantastic place to see many types of wildlife, including some very adorable Koala Bears.

Those that visit the Voortrekker Monument don’t come because of its amazing beauty. They come because of its historical significance. It stands as a victorious symbol for the Voortrekkers who fought and won the infamous Battle of Blood River. With more than 10 thousand Zulus against less than 500 Voortrekkers, an amazing battle took place. At the onset of the fight, the Voortrekkers vowed to build a church to honor God if they won the battle. The monument today stands as a reminder for those that fought with courage and determination. Try to get there at noon on a sunny day and see the way the light falls on the monument – it’s quite amazing.
Steeped in a rich history and filled with great sites, Pretoria is a fantastic place to visit and learn more about South Africa’s history.
