Castries is the lively capital of Saint Lucia. As a bustling port for cruise ships it has a number of great sites, shopping venues and beautiful beaches for you to explore. As you arrive you may notice the city tends to look quite new compared to other Caribbean cities. Unfortunately, Castries has experienced a number of fires, the last of which was in 1948, and thus much of the old architecture fell to ruins. What they have lost in their buildings the locals have made up with their colorful clothing and unique crafts. The harbor of Castries is a busy place for hotels and restaurants eager to take in the cruise ship business. Wherever you go though, Castries provides you with a wonderful glimpse into the island life.

Although many of the buildings have been redone in the past few decades you can enjoy a sample of the old grandeur at Morne Fortune. Although this battleground has a harsh history you can explore its museum, military cemetery and the battery that stand today. Its shining gem though is the Government House whose Victorian architecture is one of the few that remain today. Another great site worth visiting includes the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, which was built back in the 1890s.

Those who prefer to have someone guide their route can go exploring on a heritage walk. It is a wonderful way to see many of the key sites and have someone explain what their importance is. Make sure you stop in the Derek Walcott Square, which is a favorite for both locals and tourists alike. Shoppers will love the public market that is open every day, except for Sundays. The locals who brought them in proudly display the crafts and produce. It is a great place to bring home a memory from Castries.

Although there is so much to see, Castries also plays host to a number of fantastic beaches. Some of the more popular ones in the vicinity include Vigie Beach, La Toc Beach and Malabar Beach. Spend your days lounging around on the sand, enjoying the water activities or go and explore the sites. Whatever you do, your trip to Castries will filled with great memories.
