Most associate Casablanca with Humphrey Bogart but alas the Hollywood elite have duped us. Although the story was set here the filming was done elsewhere. Thus, first time visitors are a bit surprised when they arrive. Casablanca is a surprisingly modern looking city complete with skyscrapers. Located along the Atlantic Ocean this impressive place is Morocco’s business center. True, it may not show you an authentic side of Morocco but Casablanca does show you a unique side of it. Besides, it is just a hop, skip and a jump away from some of Europe’s major airports and is worth adding to your itinerary.
As Morocco’s largest city, Casablanca is home to a number of great attractions. Although it separated from France back in 1956 it has continued to showcase that history. The area known as New Town is lined with buildings and hotels that depict the French era. Parc de la Ligue Arabe is the known as the city’s largest parks. Of course, Casablanca’s most famous site is the incredible King Hassan II Mosque. As one of the largest in the world it proudly displays the tallest minaret to date. Interestingly enough, it is open to non-Muslims and so visitors will be able to get a firsthand look at all its splendor. Interested in seeing more splendors? Shopping in Casablanca isn’t all that good or bad. However, a trip to the Ancienne Medina is worth the trip. The streets are lined with souks and bazaars and are filled with almost anything you could be searching for. True, some of the other Moroccan cities can provide you with a much larger version but Casablanca’s is still fun to wander through. Take a break from here though and head over to the great beaches. Eating in Casablanca is definitely a highlight for any vacationer. You will get your fill of couscous but some of its more traditional dishes are worth taking leftovers home. Left to simmer for hours on end, the tagine is a dish filled with flavor. Of course, you can also enjoy a number of seafood dishes that have been skillfully prepared.
Whether you spend only a few days or decide to set up camp for a while, Casablanca is a unique city where past traditions and new fads have intertwined. Exploring these contrasts only help add to your adventure.
