Palenque is a quaint town located in Mexico, close to the border of Guatemala. It is an historic place known for its ancient ruins and beautiful waterfalls. You could spend a week exploring its historic sites or a few days wandering through the town. Either way, Palenque allows you to enjoy Mexico’s past and beautiful nature.
Surrounded by mountains, the Palenque ruins are located a few miles away from the actual city. They are one of the most studied Maya sites in the world and showcases what is considered to be some of the finest architecture and sculptures available. This archeological zone is definitely one of the primary reasons why visitors come to Palenque.
Another reason are for the Misol-Ha and Agua Azul waterfalls. The largest fall at Misol-Ha stands at an impressive 90 feet. Agua Azul is about 20 miles further. Take your time as you splash in the pools of water and climb up the slippery slopes. Misol-Ha does have a restaurant but you could also pack a lunch and lay out on a blanket. Most hotels can provide transportation and other info but you should set aside a full day to enjoy both of these falls.
The town of Palenque is a few miles away from the ruins and getting to and from the town to the ancient site is easy to find. Its main street, Avenida Juárez, includes a plaza and a turn off to the ruins. This road can also lead you to Canada. Nope, you are nowhere near North America. This Canada includes a number of hotels that are surrounded by the lush forest… and there is no snow in sight.
Palenque is not your typical Mexican destination and yet it provides great insight into what the real Mexico has to offer. It is an ideal choice for those interested in learning more about this country’s past and for those looking to do something different on their holiday.
