La Paz is considered the administrative capital of the country. It is also the highest capital in the world and thus it can offer you many 'highs'. There is the highest airport, the highest ski resort, the highest golf course and of course the highest panoramic views you can enjoy. Enjoy plazas filled with colonial architecture and statues, extensive hiking paths and the amazing Cordillera Real mountain ranges. Being this close to the sky definitely has its benefits.
Although the Cordillera Real ranges have plenty for you to enjoy, La Paz is a short distance away from the Andes Mountains. If you plan your time here well you can easily explore both. For all the hiking enthusiasts a trip to the impressive Illimani Mountain, which stands at over 21,000 feet, is a must. Perhaps you would like to enjoy the Illimani from a distance, and not necessarily hike your way up it. If that should be the case, visit the Mirador Monticulo park. It has a great view of the Illimani.
The Iglesia de San Franscisco is a wonderful example of the architectural detail found throughout the city. The area known as Calle Jaen though has quite a few historic buildings, some of which house museums. If you are interested in wandering through a museum the Coca Museum is a must. Although not terribly big, it does hold a lot of great information about this plant and the effect it has had on the world. Sagarnaga Street is lined with places for you to take home a memory of La Paz.
La Paz is close to one of the world's oldest cities, Tiahuanaco. Archeologists and tourists love exploring its impressive buildings and ruins. Another short drive away will take you to the Valle de La Luna, the Moon Valley. The incredible rock formations are truly unique and worth the trip. Then there is Death Road. The 45-mile trek to Coroico has close to 100 deaths every year. The scenic views though are beautiful. If you are willing, test out your luck… just keep your hands folded in prayer the whole way down, unless you are biking. Then that would be a bad idea.
As mentioned earlier, La Paz is home to the world's highest ski resort. Although the views are absolutely astounding being this close to the sun does have its disadvantages. The Chacaltaya glacier is slowly melting however, the resort is trying to combat this by providing artificial snow. Hopefully they continue to win this battle as the runs that Chacaltaya offer are truly amazing.
The crisp mountain air, unbelievable natural beauty, interesting museums and stunning architecture all help make La Paz an incredible place to explore.
