Situated east of Puerto Vallarta, Guadalajara is the capital of Jalisco. Although this Mexican city is not situated along the Pacific Ocean, it offers you a wealth of amazing sites. It is a city proud of its heritage and is often thought of as being the most authentic city in all of Mexico. Guadalajara is one of the largest cities in the country and yet it has remained true to its roots and thus offers you a unique Mexican experience.
Due its impressive size, making your way around Guadalajara can be quite confusing. The Centro Historico area is filled with stunning architecture. One of its most well known structures is the Cathedral. This beautiful building is also a great starting point if you are interested in touring the city and nearby plazas. Tlaquepaque is a wonderful place to buy handmade crafts, as is the area known as Tonalá. The Sector Juárez district has a number of stores, including two malls for those who love to shop. Zapopan is actually a neighboring city but its border runs alongside Guadalajara’s and so the two are often associated together. It also has a great sea market. This area is known for its lively nightclubs and great restaurants as well. Zapopan has one of the most well known festivals in the country. Every year there are over 100 parishes that join together for a pilgrimage in hopes to protect the city from flooding. This festival draws hundreds of thousands of people and is quite an amazing site to see.
Guadalajara has many wonderful places to enjoy shopping. Its biggest mall is the Plaza Galerías. However, you will find that the entire city has a variety of shops, boutiques and roadside stands. The Mercado Libertad is one of the largest markets in all of Latin America. As mentioned before, Tlaquepaque is a great place to buy handmade crafts. In fact, people from all over the country and any visitor to this area come to see what treasures they can all find. Make sure you give yourself enough time to go through it all.
This impressive city has protected its history and culture very well and what Mexican experience would be complete without a visit to Tequila? True enough, this town does exist and is only a short distance away from Guadalajara. The Plaza de Toros Nuevo Progreso will give you a firsthand look at authentic bullfights, which run on most Sundays from October through March. Or, you could watch the local cowboys compete in events at the Lienzo charro de Jalisco. There are many festivals held throughout the year, but if you happen to be here during a lull you can still enjoy the fantastic music that seems to last all night long. Of course, Guadalajara also has some of the finest Mexican dishes to be had in the entire country. Family recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation have only gotten more flavorful over the years.
Guadalajara is an incredible place where traditions and culture are celebrated. It is a place where you will experience all that Mexico has to offer while you stroll through the streets, plazas and markets. It is a place where memories will be created.
