Udaipur provides visitors with a tranquil experience where palaces, lakes and luxurious resorts abound. In fact, it is often referred to as the Venice of the East. Travelers seeking relaxation or a romantic destination absolutely love coming to Udaipur. The weather is wonderful, you are treated to stunning views and the surrounding mountains are ideal for hiking and horseback riding. Udaipur has three lakes within the city's boundaries Pichhola Lake, Swaroop Sagar Lake and Fateh Sagar Lake. Most of the popular attractions though are found close to Pichhola Lake. If you are interested in exploring beyond these shores you can hire a taxi or rickshaw and discover more of what Udaipur has to offer.
The Lake Palace was built in 1754 and is one of Udaipur's most famous attractions as it is entirely made of marble. The City Palace is another popular site and shows off impressive architecture complete with turrets, arches and domes. If you have time, make your way to the Jagdish Temple, which is located in the middle of the city. Another must see is the impressive Solar Observatory. Located on an island in Lake Fatesagar it is the only one of its kind in all of India.
Reaching the Monsoon Palace may take you a bit of time but it is worth it. Known locally as the Sajjangarh Fort it was a summer retreat for the Maharajas. Its hilltop location makes it a fantastic place to enjoy both city and lake views. Located nearby is also a wildlife sanctuary. Just north of Udaipur is a village called Shilpgram. It is a wonderful destination for travelers eager to learn more of India's culture and heritage and is a great place to purchase handmade crafts.
