The historic Guatemala City is packed with people and buildings, culture and sites. Its geographical location makes it an ideal starting point as you explore the surrounding areas. If you don’t want to explore the city by foot its better to go in a cab, rather than rent a car simply because the cab drivers know where your destination is and how to work the streets.
If you’re looking for ruins, Guatemala City has many wonderful sites that allow you to explore the ancient Mayan civilizations that thrived here. Prefer a little shopping? Make your way to la Zona Viva where you’ll find trendy shops as well as great restaurants, clubs and hotels. In general though, Guatemala City is a wonderful place to enjoy the local arts and crafts. It won’t be hard to find the brightly colored blankets and coats or the leather shoes and bags that hang from the vendors’ stalls. Keep in mind you can bargain your way to a fair price.
Plaza Mayor is the main plaza in Guatemala City. Nearby you’ll also find the Palacio Nacional, which was completed in 1943. The most modern looking building is the beautiful National Theater. Its pyramid shape can accommodate more than 2000 guests. Try to catch a performance in this impressive building if you get a chance.
Interested in taking a short trip outside of the city? Make your way to Antigua for a wonderful experience. This charming city has many quaint coffee shops, beautiful fountains, cobblestone streets and great restaurants. Although there are many sites to see, one of the must do’s is the Volcano Agua. Standing close to 11,500 feet this amazing volcano is even more beautiful as you climb up it. It hasn’t been active for more than four centuries and gives you quite a rush as you make your way up and down its path. Best to climb it using grubby clothes as the soot and silt tend to stick on you making it pretty hard to get it out of your clothes.
Exploring Guatemala City is a fantastic experience where you can learn about the Mayans, enjoy the thriving cultural scene and learn about the history that’s portrayed at almost every corner.
