As one of French Polynesia's most popular destinations, Bora Bora has been a favorite for vacationers looking for a unique getaway and those willing to pay a little extra. At the centre of this stunning island lies two volcano peaks Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu, which is the higher of the two. Surrounding the island is a picturesque lagoon that is rimmed by a coral reef. It truly is a sight to behold.
The lagoon is protected from the surrounding waters because of the coral and that means the island has taken its time to create stunning beaches. Although there are many for you to choose from a favorite is the Matira Point, located on the southern end of the island.
Spend your days exploring the island on a 4x4, lounge on the beach or take advantage of a number of fantastic water activities. One of its most famous is the shark and stingray feeding tours. Many tourists will rent a bike and go exploring. Because the island is actually quite small you could make your way around it and enjoy a firsthand experience of its beauty. Another favorite activity is to go horseback riding along the shores and trails.
There is shopping to be done in Bora Bora, although the selections are pretty sparse. However, keep your eyes open for the legendary black pearls. Bora Bora also has a number of art galleries, which feature wonderful works of art. If you happen to be here in the fall you could see the end of the Hawaiki Nui Va'a. This world-famous canoe race begins in Huahine and makes its way all the way to Bora Bora. It is quite a sight to see 100 traditional canoes making their way into the shores.
Most of the accommodations take advantage of the lagoon, some of which allow you to sleep on a bungalow that sits atop of it. In fact, tourism has quickly become a major income earner for Bora Bora. But don't worry. You'll still be able to experience a wonderful island getaway.
Paradise doesn't come cheap though. Bora Bora will require some extra funds but your accommodations, the scenery and friendly locals make it worth every penny.
