In the midst of the plethora of activity that exists, you’ll find amazing sites, captivating aromas and wonderful people even though Cairo can sometimes feel like the most disorganized city on the planet.
Tahrir Square is consistently buzzing with activity. The north side houses the Egyptian Museum and the south showcases Old Cairo, which happens to be the city’s oldest Islamic and Christian area. The highlights of Old Cairo is the Khan el Khalili Bazaar and the Citadel. For those who love to shop, head over to the Talat Harb Street where you’ll be treated to some pretty amazing outlets. The Birqash Camel Market is also a real treat. It’s located on the Western Desert and takes a few hours to get here, but once you arrive, it’s quite a site to see the camels that have traveled many days… and only to get traded. Built by pharaohs, the Al-Fayoum is a fantastic oasis. In fact, it’s Egypt’s largest oasis. The canals and lake Birket Qarun are also truly amazing waterholes in this desert. Cairo’s Egyptian Museum houses one of the very best collections of Egyptian artifacts. Make sure you plan out your time before you get there, as it’s impossible to see them all in a single session. With more than 135,000 artifacts, it would take months to see them all.
Although Cairo has a lot of buildings, you’ll see a fantastic selection of styles, sizes and of course different shapes. Enjoy seeing the fantastic examples of medieval buildings. One of the more interesting structures is the Cairo Tower. Standing more than 600 feet tall, its unique lattice pattern can be seen from around the city. Make your way to the top for an unparallel view of the city. When you first think of Egypt one of the initial images you think of are the impressive pyramids. Make the short trip to Giza and stand in awe of the Great Pyramids, one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World.
Not that you’d need to be reminded, but Cairo is in the desert so get ready for some heat. Other then getting a great tan and drinking your fair share of water, the heat also makes the nightlife the time to go out for a fantastic dinner, do a little shopping or enjoy a wonderful performance at the Cairo Opera House.
