We stay at this hotel everytime that we are in CR. The breakfast is yummy with fruit, coffee and pastries. The staff is very helpful and everyone speaks English.

GREAT for the price - posted on 02/16/2007

Good location to everything, thats a good and a bad. It is in the red light area, so leaving after 6pm is NOT recommended. However,we had no problems. Great for a SHORT stay in San Jose. Anything longer, shouldn't be here. Limited menu and hours at restaurante. Breakfast is NON-existent. Small, beautiful, and a great price.

Excellent Value/Experience - posted on 12/07/2006

This charming location has hidden qualities. The wired internet access enables GREAT Skype quality to US. The staff is wonderful with help, directions, ideas. Adjoining exercise room, pool and jacuzi are a nice respite after walking in the city. Don't walk at night anwhere in SJO (or Detroit or Miami for that matter). Use a taxi, very inexpensive. Daylight walking is no problem. Spend $10 more for a luxury room. Ask for a room that is not on the front street. Is my favorite B&B in San Jose after 10+ trips in other hotels. Best overall value and experience in town... GREAT STAFF!

The location is not the best(approx. 6blocks from the red light district), but the staff and fac makes up for it. The hotel is truly a bed&breakfast- nice woodwork with tiled floors. Of course, it is a little worn, but it is spotless and very well perserved. If, you are looking for "new&shiny" this hotel is not for you; but if you are looking for affordable with an excellent staff- this is the place. With the San Tomas you may give up a few conveniences(air-cond&walking around at night); but the friendly helpful staff, good food, and clean everything won us over. www.3boytravel.com

nice people, moldy room - posted on 10/10/2006

We were greeted at the gate and felt very welcome. We had no trouble communicating in English. Like most hotels we stayed in it was almost vacant because of the rainy season. The hotel looks just like what you see on the web page. Everything was great until we got into the room and smelled mold. I guess this is a common problem in the moist climate, but this was the worst we experienced. The pool is beautiful, but seemed inappropriate for swimming since was so close to the dinning area. The town square, shopping and gold museum were with a 15 minute walk.

I love this hotel - posted on 09/18/2006

This hotel couldn't be better for the money! Rooms were quiet and clean, service was great, food at the restaurant was excellent, tours available for local travel were top notch!

The food was not the best. Chef tried to cook American & Italian cuisine, but failed to accomplish. Menu was American cuisine.

Poor location/parking - posted on 07/18/2006

Very Hard to find if you are driving (1 out of 10 corners might have a street #). Narrow roads were packed with truck/bus/cars. Don't go out at night! Steel gate is kept locked even during daytime! Inside looked OK - but we didn't stay when told there was no parking($20 extra). That put price in line with nicer hotels.

Very Helpful Staff - posted on 06/12/2006

After a long flight and scary taxi ride, the hotel was a little disapointing as I wanted to be a true room service american at that point. A better descripton of the Santo Thomas would be a hybrid bed and breakfast/hotel. That said, the staff at the hotel made our honeymoon the best it ever could have been. Incredibally helpful in travel arrangements, very personalble, and helped us save lots of time and money. I would definitly stay again with the understanding that this is not your typical american hotel.

It was overall pretty good. The old-style mansion was extragavant. It was amazing and very fun, especially if you are an adventurer. It definetly fits the mood.

Keep Going Back - posted on 09/30/2005

My family has gone to Costa Rica 3 times; each time spent our coming and going days at Hotel Santo Thomas. It is a wonderful hotel, excellent staff, interesting history, personable owner, close to whatever you need; cafe across the street will deliver you your dinner. Much much better than a large corporate chain place. Hands down, one of the best places I've ever stayed anywhere at any time.

Very Nice - posted on 09/09/2005

The staff was very nice and very helpful. The Hotel was clean and felt like a hotel not a motel. The staff helped us rent a car and was knowledgeable about what to do in Costa Rica and how to do it. We were able to leave some of our luggage here for a few days while we traveled around the country. There is a very nice restaurant in the hotel. Very good!

Excellent Experience at Hotel Santo Tomas - posted on 01/19/2005

I was very pleasantly surprised at this quaint, beatiful, hotel in the Heart of San Jose. It is a wonderfully re-furbished turn of the century coffee-grower mansion, that has a tremendous amount of charm. It has a very attractive pool, well equipped gym, and one of the best restaurants in the area. Above, all, the service was great. All of the staff members are courteous, helpful, and attentive. It would be a pleasure to stay again, and I would recommend it to anyone. Very Reasonably priced, too!!
