The Ciragan Palace is the ultimate Istanbul hotel. As its name suggests, it was once the residence of the last Ottoman Sultans and from the minute you walk into the grand entrance you will feel like you have stepped into another world. Originally built in the 16th century, it was refurbished in marble in 1857 for the Sultan Abdul Aziz before being damaged by fire in 1910 and was finally restored to its former glory in 1986. The result is a luxury hotel that has certainly earned its place as the first hotel in Turkey to gain membership of the exclusive ‘Leading Hotels of the World ’ club. It is within walking distance of the fashionable waterside district of Ortakoy, which is famous for its fish restaurants and open air nightclubs and popular with İstanbul society. It is also within easy reach of the most important shopping centres and historical sites.
Does HotelsByCity recommend this hotel?
This hotel is perfect for honeymooners, VIP’s or travellers who appreciate luxury and world class facilities. Guests generally give the hotel top marks for cleanliness, location and facilities, especially the outdoor pool facilities. The hotel also has some of the best views in Istanbul. The main drawback of the hotel is the price of the food. While the food may be excellent, it is rather exorbitantly priced. Likewise, think carefully before you order anything from room service because this is likely to set you back a small fortune. A few guests also complained that their room was a little noisy. To avoid this, ask for a room facing the Bosphorus as this is likely to keep the noise levels down.

Ciragan is actually two separate buildings; a restored palace featuring 11 specialty suites and an adjoining 5-star hotel with 315 rooms. As it is the only hotel in Istanbul located directly on the European Bosphorus shore, views from the rooms are unbeatable. All standard rooms feature air conditioning, a work area, sliding windows, separate bath and shower, security box and voice mail. The suites are more deluxe and features may vary. The hotel also has special rooms for disabled guests.
This hotel is literally packed with facilities. It has two world-class restaurants; one of which, the Tugra, is famous for its classical Ottoman cuisine and has been selected as one of the best ten hotel restaurants in the world by ‘Hotels’ magazine. Laledan serves the finest Mediterranean cuisine in Istanbul. It is definitely worth spending some time at the hamam (Turkish bath) and taking advantage of the special scrub or relaxing by the pool which is heated to 30 degrees in cooler weather. If you are willing to part with some spare cash, you can buy a carpet or jewellery from one of the hotel’s boutique shops. The hotel also has conference facilities for up to 1200 people.
