Granada Hotel Guide Cheap Granada Hotels

Located along the base of the Sierra Nevada Mountains with the Darro and Genil rivers flowing through it, Granada is a beautiful capital whose natural beauty equals the history and architecture that thrives here. Here, everything takes time. Considering the castles and cathedrals took centuries to build, schedules take on a different meaning in Granada. As you explore the city and discover its hidden treasures and turbulent history, you will come to appreciate its relaxed pace. There is no need to rush, no need to hurry along. What more could you ask for when on a holiday?

Granadas past will forever be remembered for the fall of the Moors. The effects of forcing the Muslim population to convert to Roman Catholicism, or be expelled from the land, can still be seen today. Many of the Muslim buildings were destroyed in the process but of those that survived, they are one of the highlights when visiting Granada.

The Alhambra, also known as the Red Castle, is a stunning Moorish citadel and palace. The complex sits at the base of the Sierra Nevada and includes various buildings. The view of Granada below is a great reason to come as well. It has a complex history involving Judaism, Christianity and Islam, making it one of Granadas most popular sites. It is possible to buy your ticket months in advance, which may not be such a bad idea considering there are often lines waiting to enter the grounds. Nearby lies the Generalife, which is one of the oldest gardens in the city. Another interesting palace worth exploring is the Palacio de Generalife. It was used as the summer estate for the sultans of Granada. The Albaicin is a mosque located in the Arab quarter, which is a charming neighborhood filled with plazas, shops and teahouses. The streets are a bit of a maze though so keep your eyes open for landmarks.

The Christian influenced buildings are quite spectacular as well. The Cathedral of Granada began building in 1520 but took centuries to complete. Architectural enthusiasts will appreciate the Renaissance and Baroque influences. The Sacromonte Abbey is a church as well as an amazing museum. There are catacombs whose passages lead you to paintings and statues. If you should come across the statues of the martyred saints, know that their ashes are housed beneath them. Paintings, including the Dead Christ supported by an Angel, tapestries and other artworks are on display throughout the abbey.

Other interesting sites include the Bauelo, which are known as some of the oldest baths in all of Spain, the Alcaicera, a street lined with souvenirs, and the Zacatin. The later was once home to silversmiths, shoemakers and tanners. Granada has many different city squares and public places throughout the city. Most include beautiful statues and gardens and worth spending a few hours at.

The Sierra Nevada Mountains not only provide you with a picture perfect backdrop, but they also serve a greater purpose skiing. Only an hour away from the city, the ski runs at Andalusia are championship quality. Interestingly enough, you could drive another 45 minutes and park yourself on a beach and soak up the rays. Granadas landscape also includes the impressive Sacromonte hill. Overlooking the city, the cave dwellings were once home to the gypsy community. Today, you will find an eclectic mix of cultures. One of the highlights when visiting this area is catching a Flamenco performance. Now, there are some that feel they are sub-par and not worth the money. However, sometimes the cheesy performances are a lot of fun and quite entertaining. Take the plunge and decide for yourself.

A highlight for any evening in Spain is going for tapas. Your options can vary from a dish of olives to a light meal, depending on the protocol for the bar you are visiting. You could spend an entire evening hoping from place to place. Granada also caters to its university population. The Pedro Alarcn is the place for the young at heart, however, because the clubs tend to cater to their students, they also calm down during the summer months. The Calle Elvira and Plaza Nueva areas attract the more mature but no matter where you go in Granada, you are sure to enjoy a pleasant evening.

The Granada of today is a fantastic destination to explore Spains past and exotic culture. Here, you can learn a bit of history, explore the sites, take in the scenery and enjoy the nightlife and you dont have to rush around to do it all.
