Krakow once acted as the political capital of Poland but today it stands as an important cultural city. It is filled with beautiful architecture and history and a visit here is sure to leave a lasting impression. Interestingly enough Krakow escaped much of the bombings that occurred during WWII and thus, its history is still intact. As you begin your journey you'll quickly come to see why this city is filled with so much culture.
Make your way to the center of Krakow and you'll come across the Main Market Square. This is the place for a number of local events as well as a good place to begin a day of exploring. Another famous neighborhood' is Wawel Hill. Here you will find the royal palace as well as a cathedral. Interestingly enough Pope John Paul the II was an archbishop here.
St. Mary's Church is a beautiful place to visit but what makes it unique is the trumpet call. As you stand to listen you might be surprised at its abrupt ending. However, history tells the story of the player's untimely death during the Tatars' invasion and thus the melody played today is a tribute to the valiant efforts put forth by the original trumpeter.
Auschwitz is a stunning reminder of the horrors that occurred during World War II. A visit to the Holocaust Museum at Auschwitz will provide you with much insight and you'll gain a greater knowledge to this horrific world event. Please note that younger travelers should probably not come, as it will probably be far to graphic for them to grasp what all transpired.
Krakow is also lined with fantastic museums and galleries. Whether you make your way through old town or one of the other popular districts you could spend your entire holiday wandering from one exhibit to the other. That shouldn't come as too big a surprise though as Krakow is filled with history and culture.
Your evenings can be spent strolling along the cobblestone streets and letting your nose guide you to a great restaurant. Or you could make some new friends at a local pub. However you decide to spend your evening you'll be able to look back and remember all the great sites you discovered throughout the day.
