Poland Country Guide

Although not a very large country, Poland made quite an impact on the world's history. Known for its infamous Holocaust concentration camps it is forever scarred. However, its history now provides insight into a terrible time and today welcomes visitors eager to learn and discover all that it has to offer. Famous people who hail from Poland include Pope John Paul the II, the legendary pianist Frederic Chopin as well as Academy Award winning director Roman Polanski. Long gone are the days where Poland was thought of as a polka loving, sausage eating country, although you can still do both. Today, Poland stands as a country filled with history and culture as well as a place that attracts major fairs and exhibitions.

As you discover Poland you will see a country filled with beautiful lakes, dense forests, mountain ranges and sandy beaches. In fact, Poland is home to one of the largest number of lakes throughout the world. One of its most famous is the Masurian Lakes. Poland also has 20 national parks within its borders. If you only have time for one make your way to Bialowieza and see where the Bison roam. The Bieszczady Mountains are another famous attraction, especially during the winter months when the skiers come out but anytime of year is a great time to discover these ranges .

Poland is also home to a number of large cities as well as quaint towns and villages. Krakow is known for its history and is filled with fantastic historic sites as it was one of the few cities that managed to escape the devastating bombings of World War II. Warsaw, the capital city, also had its share of history but today has become one of Poland's thriving cities. Danzig has something unique to offer. Make sure you explore the Gothic church, which is one of the largest of its kind in the world. Exploring the countryside shows you a different side of Poland. Much of it has remained unspoiled leaving you to enjoy the cycling and hiking trails. Keep your eyes open for the handmade craft stands, ruins and quaint restaurants that dot the horizon.

What is there to see in Poland? Learn a bit of music history at the wonderful Frederick Chopin Museum, which is located in Warsaw. Or, learn about the atrocities that occurred at Auschwitz. The grounds are open for visitors and there is a museum as well. It is important to note that young travelers should probably not come, as it may be too graphic for them to handle. Also, photos are not allowed. Remember, this isn't your typical attraction.

Those interested in a unique adventure may want to explore the Wieliczka-Bochnia salt mines. As you make your way through the levels you'll come across fantastic displays of art and statues, which have all been sculpted out of the salt. The Royal Lazienki Park, located in downtown Warsaw, is another great place to discover Polish sculptures. Here you will also find monuments and gardens, a stunning castle and as well as an Egyptian pyramid. Close to it lies the Royal Castle, which is still used as a residence by the Polish royalty. Try to take time for an inside tour.

Those traveling here for business may be familiar with the Poznan International Fair, which is the largest complex of its kind in the country. Those traveling here for shopping will have heard of Blue City and Arkadia. Blue City was Poland's first massive mall. In addition to shopping there are go-kart tracks and other fun activities. Arkadia is the latest mega mall. It currently has bragging rights to being the largest shopping mall in Central Europe. Now that's a lot of stores.

Visitors to Poland are impressed with the historic buildings as well as host of modern amenities. It may be a small country but it sure does have a lot to offer.
